Now having had 3 "cheap" rangefinders...2 bushnell and a Wildgame POS...I'm ready to fork over the $$$ for a quality rangefinder. What do you long range guys rely on? Really looking in the mid-range I guess you'd say. Compacts are nice but a lot I read claims they are tough to hold steady at longer ranges. Thoughts? Looking to accurately range up to say 800 yds assuming I get proficient at shooting up to that distance.

Camofire recently had the Leica CRF Rangemasters on sale for 20% off. I went with the CRF 1000-R because it's better equipped for bowhunting and 1000 yard ranging is plenty far for me. I'm planning to do a lot of Western hunts over the next 10 years, so I decided to buy once and cry once.

They may still have some in stock. Shoot them an e-mail if you're interested.

Here's some rangefinder ratings to consider:

I have the older Leica LRF 1200. The best I've been able to range is 1178 yards. The keys in the smaller range finders is a steady hold (think tripod). Including what Mr. Big said, I'd also consider the Swarovski and Zeiss rangefinders. The sweet spot in pricing is going to be somewhere around $600-$1,000.

Leica 900 scan, it's an older unit but simply the best I've ever used. I'm sure the newer Leica work extremely well.

I have the Leica 1000r and couldn't be happier. Great glass and love the red display.

Been using a Leica for about 12 years. Not sure of the brands I owned before then but always had problems getting them to read. The Leica gives me a reading first time 99.9% of the time.

A few years ago when I checked into the Leica had no warranty or even repair. I bought a Swarovski and have been well pleased it is good for long distance.
