I got out of rabbit hunting in the early 90's. My father and I had one heck of a team of begals back in the day. I hunt deer and turkey mainly now days. Once deer season is over i go on a few rabbit hunts with friends. We now have a pet , half basset/begal. At 4 months old he ran a rabbit that was in our yard. I did not think much of it. Well for what ever reason the last few weekend i cant get friends locked down to go rabbit hunting. So sunday morning I get the urge to go. I catch family pet who is now a year old. We head over to my lease property. Im thinking this lazy mut will not even go in a thicket. He hits the tickets and starts hunting like crazy. He starts to whine around , im thinking yea im going to have to go out in the briars and get him. Next think i know he barks and the race is on. I saw rabbit cross rd 50 yds above me less than a min later mr bunny is 10 yds in front of me. I take aim and get him. While my dog is sounding off like a fog horn closeing in fast. I was pumped more than when I killed a drop tine 8 during deer season. Not bad for a pet.

Congrats, believe it or not, basset/beagle mix makes good rabbit dogs. If he didn't leave the county when you fired off a round then you got yourself a good dog.

no he is not gun shy. The guy I got him from sales reg. basset hounds. He also has excellent rabbit dogs. One of the male begals got loose when the basset was in heat. So i ended up with a free pet.

cool deal.

the old man we used to deer hunt with has/had some good rabbit dogs over the years. he's had awesome beagles and had 1 awesome rat terrier who run run a rabbit like no other. unfortunately it got ran over several years back. i just thought it was cool that a rat terrier could hang in the thickets with the beagles.

My Dad always had beagles when I was growing up and we always went every weekend after deer season. Well I'm 23 now and have moved away but last weekend I went with him again. We got three rabbits. I plan on moving back as soon as I find a job back home. I miss the good ol days lol. I have a mini dachsund he is a year and half old and he trees squirrels. Here the other day he had a groundhog bayed in a 12" culvert by the house. He stayed in the culvert with the groundhog till it ran out and the chase was on till the groundhog ran in its den. The little dog then dug his heart out till dark after the thing lol.
