Sunday morning I hit the woods with the goal of shooting a big doe for the freezer. I wasn't expecting much action with the warm temps but wanted to get out there. Activity pretty much started at daylight till about 10:30 when I left. Ended up seeing 5 different spikes and they were running around grunting and chasing does like crazy. Only shot opportunities I had were on 2 spikes and I decided not to burn a tag on them. I went home for lunch and played outside with the kids a while and my wife said I should head back out and hunt the evening. I jumped one deer going in about 3:30 then got settled back in my stand. About 4:25 I see a doe and yearling easing thru about 100 yards up the ridge to my right. I'm watching them when I hear the loudest most aggressive grunt I've ever heard. I hit my grunt a couple of times and then heard the loud grunt again and what I would describe as a growl. Never heard it before and it made my hair stand up. Looked back up the hill and this 9 point was walking stiff legged to me and he was bristled up looking for a fight. I shot him about 75 yards at 4:30 and 79 degrees outside. Field dressed 125 pounds. So this morning I went back to the same tree and saw zero rut activity but managed to shoot a good doe. She dressed 74 pounds.
