Looking for some recommendations on what to plant this season. Fields are normally rotating crops (beans or corn) but due to the amount of rain the farmer decided to default and take the issuance money. The plan is to plant the areas noted in green and allow the rest to grow for access cover and deer security. The larger plots will be between 2-3 acres each, and the smaller is around 1/2 acre. The neighbors to the east are planning beans, corn, sunflowers, and turnips. The soil is solid, land is flat, and we have access to whatever equipment needed so really the only challenges are time and weather. Prep work is scheduled to start middle of August and seed can be scheduled any time from there.

My plot experience is minimal and on a much smaller scale so any advice would be greatly appreciate. Fire away with your recommendations!

IMO plain ol' oats are hard to beat. I plant forage oats and deer love'em. Pretty cheap too. Too many people disregard the KISS method when it comes to food plots for deer.

Oats or wheat would be good options. I will also do Winter peas that I will plant mid Sept/Oct. Seed will be cheap for oats/wheat spend the money on fertilizer, assuming your pH is 6+.

The last couple years we've been doing a mix of oats, winter peas, purple top turnips and daikon radishes. We've had fantastic results with that mix, although it's a high density area and I suspect they'd hammer anything we planted.

Very similar to what we plant. It does well for us.

Very similar to us too. This is ours per acre...

Wheat - 60 lbs
Austrian Winter Peas - 10 lbs
Daikon radishes - 3 lbs
Crimson clover - 3 lbs
Purple Top Turnips - 2 lbs
Rape - 2 lbs

How much does that combo of seed run ya?

I'd call around for best prices. My mix above for planting 15 acres is around $680 before tax...about $45-$55 an acre. Much cheaper than the brand names

I just stopped by to let you know I thought you was asking for pot planting recommendations [emoji16]

Not sure where you are located but we get all of our seed from Scruggs in Tupelo, MS. We buy Buck Forage Oats and put down 200 lbs 13-13-14 per acre and plant around 5 acres and seems like we usually spend $800 a year or so.
