Planting rate....if you are planting by hand with a hoe dad on soft pasture ground....50+ an hour shouldn't be a problem. If you have hard ground and/or need to chop through roots to get them in the ground, that number will plummet. There are mechanized tractor pulled tree planting machines that can knock out thousands in a day, if you are planting pastureland.

Planting densitities will depend on what your goals are, the state forester should be able to tell the options. There are different schools of thought regarding which densities are most profitable for future timber cuts. I've got about 15 acres that is just about ready for the first cut. Half planted in '89, the rest a few years later. Before cutting I'm going to look at options and impact on deer hunting will be a consideration. I'll probably open it up a lot more than what is normal for a 20 year cut.

I've learned my lesson about planting pines...

Pay someone else to do it! ;)

Actually, 500 isn't so bad. But try planting 6,000!

I'll never do that again...

I have planted 300 myself in a day and thought I was going to die the next day. I hire a couple of young boys not at minimum wage to help me. Best thing I have ever done. Me with 2 other boys can plant about 100/hour. That is not rushing and taking breaks.

I also heard that their is someone out there that will come in with a group of folks and plant pines for $84/acre. I am supposed to get the info and I'll pass it along. I am sure he has a minimum acreage before he would come. I met a guy the other day that told me this guy came in with a crew of about 15 or 20 folks and planted 16,000 pines (1,000/acre) in about 4 hours one Saturday in a clear cut. Amazing.

I have heard a similiar price from a logger that was at our lease. At that price depending on minimum it would be worth it. Bet BSK wishes he knew about him ealier.

If anyone is interested, I was provided a list of Forestry Vendors operating in TN. Send me your e-mail and I will forward it to you or maybe we can get a Site Admin to post it somewhere on here?

The gentlemen used by a aquaintance of mine last year is Raymond Carroll out of Adamsville. You will see him on the list. I have not talked to him yet but you will see his contact info on the document. I am planting small scale this year and probably looking at doing this in 2011.

I have thought about planting a few rows of pines along my road frontage to make my fields less visible from the road. How far apart should someone plant them to accomplish this and how many rows would it take to make the field at least some what difficult to see from the road? Also, how much do seedlings cost and where would be the best place to get them?

thats a good site

I have dealt with them the last 3 years and they are pretty decent. I have had a bad bag here and there and if you fuss enough they will give you credit on another bag. Here is the link to tell you what they have available in stock as well:

http://www.agriculture.state.tn.us/available.asp

A freind of mine is getting me another POC that supplies seedlings. The seedlings are supposed to be higher quality thatn what you get from TN forestry. He has tried both and likes these better. Believe me, you want a good seedling before you go through the hard work of planting. Nice straight root.
