I've struggled to get a good plot to establish the last 3 years due to being out of the state and only being able to work it 2 or 3 times a year. I'm thinking of just seeding really heavy with clover, but I am thinking start adding a couple of apple trees spring and fall. Any thoughts on planting? I've read that it's good to mix red delicious and granny smith because they cross pollenate each other producing better fruit yields. Would late August be a good date to start planting? How far out should I put cages to keep Bambi off them?

You may want to look into some different varieties that are disease resistant like liberty, enterprise, and goldrush. Arkansas black is also a good late season apple. There are also several pears that could be beneficial and they are a lot easier to take care of, especially if you live out of state.

I agree with Bayou Buck, apple trees usually need the most attention.I would pm steven stone about apples.Maybe even go with something else.Jap beetles were brutal on mine this year, and I have sprayed at least once a month since green up.
