So our loggers are still struggling to get a contract on our pines due to all the already known roadblocks that face our crappy TN pines. I just got word from a buddy over in West TN that he was able to secure a recent contract for his pines, albeit not quite as many acres as we have, but just wanted to hear from the group if anyone else is starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel that the mills are opening some contracts? I am close to just dozing them all down and filling the hollers with them😂

I've had a devil of a time getting a crew to thin some pine even though the mills are wide open and the weather has been good. Just last week toured 2 more loggers (a total of 7) and looks like I might finally get a crew to set up shop.

That's great news! How many acres you trying to thin out?

F&W out of Paris just sold all the pines on a tract next to us. I don't know the details, but they had the pines clear cut and are preparing to sell the mixed hardwoods now.
I'll have to look up F&W and see if they can help me out. Is that the Forestry consulting company or an actual logging outfit?

About 240ac. I've got a neighbor who's a logger and does small jobs like storm timber but I need a big outfit to get in and get it done in a timely fashion. I know there's some reputable loggers out there so I don't at all want to make a blanket statement, but some of the ones I've spoken to aren't at all trustworthy.

Do your homework.

I don't know what it is, but I've experienced the most problems with West TN loggers.

Don't even get me started BSK but you said a mouthful there. I feel like I know enough about timber to hold my own in a discussion with a logger, buyer, or forester. But I can only imagine how landowners that don't know what timber they have, what it's worth, or how to navigate a sale could absolutely get run through the wringer.

I can generally get a pretty quick read and when I smell a rat, record in my phone contacts as "Do not answer." There's no way I'd let some of these guys anywhere near my timber.

F&W is a Forestry service. You should be able to find them with an internet search. I've never looked at their work, but know they managed the recent pine cut near Bruceton, TN.

As for west TN Foresters, I strongly endorse Scott Frederick, owner of Forest Management Specialists. Scott has managed timber and harvests for over 30 years. He covers central & western TN, northern MS / AL, and western KY.

As a favor to me, he was able to sell 10 acres of large pole size pines from my farm to a pallet company.

Thanks! I am reaching out to both F&W as well as Scott and see if anyone can help
