Food Plots perrenial clover plot advice

Hey guys,

I'm going to be planting plots this weekend. Around 3 acres total. I have always done annuals, but am going to go for perrenial clover this year.

I had planned on doing WW and a variety of clover. My plots are ridge tops but not very rocky.

This is a new vernture, but ideally, my clover will be sprayable/mowable late next spring. Here are some of my basic questions. I'm sure you have answered them 1000 times, but any help would be great.

What type clover?

What pounds per acre on the mix?

Fertilizer, and spraying?

Durana clover 12.5 lbs to the acre, with 50 lbs of winter wheat, winter rye, or oats mixed in. I would also put down 250 lbs of 0-20-20 to the acre. It should have been sprayed with gly a week or two ago.

Agree with 8 points on the Durana. Do wheat or oats for a cover crop. I planted Durana this February and have great stands now. I went a little lighter - about 6 lbs per acre and they did fine. The stuff's expensive, but worth it, and a little over on the seeding rate won't hurt. It is the best clover I've used

Another vote for Durana; it's the only clover I plant. The only real difference from the good advice that's already been given is I typically don't fertilize when initially planting but will that first spring. Also, don't forget your lime.

Durana is very slow to establish so don't expect to see too much top-growth this fall; it's working on root structure. Good luck!

How big of a deal is it if i dont round-up but bushhog and disc the plots good this week and plant Saturday? Would I be throwing money away?

You'll likely have a serious weed/grass competition problem on your hands next year. If the stuff that you are bushogging is mature, there's seeds in it that will be spread when you mow. Keep in mind there's also existing seedbank in and on top of the soil. When you turn that dirt, you are basically also planting some of that undesireable stuff that will pop up in the spring.

In my opinion, it's definitely worth the time/effort to prep the soil correctly and Durana is NOT cheap seed. If you want a really good stand that will last for years (and I mean YEARS) a few more weeks to do it right will really pay off for you.

Where u getting your Durana? I've got about 10ibs of ladino have never tried the Durana but would like to. I sprayed a 1 acre plot about two weeks ago plan to disk this week and spray one more time before sowing WI oats and clover on it. If ya ever need any help Chris I'm just right across the creek from ya.

I like variety. Durana, Patriot, Resolute, heck theres a lot of good white clovers out there. Durana is definitely it though for drought, persistence, stolons per sq ft, etc. I always want a red clover like cinnamon red in clover plots too. I don't like to work the ground any to establish clover, just spray several times throughout the growing season and sow seed into the dead stuff in Fall. But that's just me, more than one way to skin that cat.

I believe I'm just going to start over on my clover plot and do it right this time. If you have to get more cleth next year I'd like to go in halves with ya as it would take me many moons to use up 2.5 gallons on 1.5 acres.

If money is no object then durana....but if it is then White advantage Ladino! it is about half the price of durana
