Unless you are going to do a bunch of clothes, I'm not sure you need a gallon. I think when I did it I mixed up 32 oz. and did a ss shirt, pants, and a hat, and had a little left over.

But, if you do a gallon, you should have some left over to put in a spray bottle for later use.

I made sure to use some rubber gloves to wring out the clothes before I hung them on the line to dry.

Buy Happy Jack Kenel Dip II from TSC if you want a permethrin product without petroleum distillates. Kenel Dip II is 17% permethrin and is water based. Permethrin 10 is 10% permethrin and about 80% petroleum distillates.

Mix 1 oz of Kennel Dip II with 1 quart of water in your sprayer to dilute it to 0.5% (Sawyer Permethrin in the yellow bottle is 0.5% Permethrin).

I'll look for that product, have been wanting to get away from the petro based Permethrin. Thanks Vermin.

An 8oz bottle will make 2 gallons. Here it is at TSC:

Happy Jack Kennel Dip II, 8 fl. oz.

...or pay a few bucks more and have Amazon ship it to your front door:

KENNEL DIP II 8OZ

If you want to wage all out war against ticks and chiggers, you can get this super awesome pressure sprayer to use for mixing and spraying your Kennel Dip II mix. I decided to drop the $16.99 on this little sprayer and I'm telling you it was worth every penny. Pump it up and you have enough pressure to pull the trigger and spray down your shirt, pants, socks and boots.

I think scn recommends the Sawyer's brand. Is that correct?

Sawyers is great, but expensive, in their pre-mixed bottles. It is my favorite brand of "store-bought". The brand I have ordered to mix my own is Martin's because it doesn't contain the petroleum distillates. It looks like the "kennel" brand that was recommended is also water-based and will work just like the Martin's .

All permethrin I have used seems to have a smell when being sprayed but seems to lose most of it once dried.

scn,

What ratio do you mix the Martin's? It shows that it is 10% Permethrin. My figures show that 1 oz of Martin's to 16 oz of wather (1:16) should get you right at .5%.

I think that's correct tn Larry. I soaked my clothes in it wed night and they been hangin outside since yesterday morning. Hope to keep those seed ticks away. They are bad at every spot I hunt.

That is the ratio I use.

The Sawyer product in the yellow bottle is 0.50% Permethrin.

To achieve a 0.50% Permethrin mix like Sawyer, you would need to mix 1 oz of Martin's Permethrin 10% with 19 oz of water.

1 oz. Martin's Permethrin 10% + 19 oz water = 20 total oz in your sprayer
10% = .10
.10 / 20 oz = .0050 = 0.50%

A 1:16 mix would result in the following:

1 oz. Martin's Permethrin 10% + 16 oz water = 17 total oz in your sprayer
10% = .10
.10 / 17 oz = .0059 = 0.59% (about 18% stronger than Sawyer Permethrin)

I read a comment on the internet that said the military uses a 1% mix, which would be twice as strong as Sawyer Permethrin. However, I have no idea if that comment is accurate or not. I am hesitant to create a mix that is much stronger than the Sawyer product for my own use.

According to my son thats what the marines use

Just a question to those mixing and using any of these products...

Why do you soak your clothes in it? I've been using Sawyers and just spraying my clothes for several years now and it keeps the ticks and seed ticks off. It just seems like soaking your clothes in it is sort of overkill.

May be overkill. But I soak mine at first of season and I don't use anything else . No more ticks. Before would walk to my stand and have hundreds on my pant legs.

It probably is overkill, Mike, but I will continue to do it. I lost one of my best friends to Rocky Mtn. SF years ago, and currently have a friend that has spent many thousands of dollars being treated for a tick-borne disease. I do a lot of my hunting in an area that is covered up in ticks, and I'm not willing to mess around with them. The Martin's permethrin is cheap compared with the health costs of having to treat one of those diseases. If soaking rather than spraying (or in addition to) is the route the armed services choose to protect their folks, then I think I'll follow their lead.

AGREED... I suffered with Lyme disease for 3 years and will likely suffer the after effects for the rest of my life. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I haven't had a tick on me in the last 3 years since using Permethrin. Thank the good lord.

Does the petroleum distillate have a smell? Just wondering what the reason for getting away from it is. I've practically took a bath in it over the years putting it on cows to keep flys off.
