Packing out deer on LBL

Ask for forgiveness not permission.

I have yet to quarter and pack out a deer on a WMA yet, but you can bet I will if need be. Dragging a deer without help or a sled more than a 1/4 mile is not something I plan to do again.

I am just waiting to cut one in half. I can easily drag 1/2 of a deer twice more easily than trying to drag a whole one.

Not sure about the rules in KY anymore but I used the gutless method in the Pennyrile SF without any eyebrows being raised. The shull was the only bone on my pack.

Gutless is the primary method for elk when only foot & bicycles are allowed behind the timber company gates.

I talked to them a few years back, when you still had to check them in, in person, and they said that they preferred them just gutted, but state rules applied. Now, there is no in person check-in, so I would assume its still OK to pack one out in TN.

Hind-sight, I passed a lot of inner-city people while Mtn Biking there last April, it's probably best not to recommend the gutless process, that would leave too much for their inner-city eyes to see.

🤣

As long as you can tell the sex you can pack any animal out in any state I've ever hunted, quota hunts or not.

In Catoosa they'll tell you if you get it out between sunrise and sunset you need to go to check in....I never get them out until after dark for some reason

Same thing happens to me on WMA's with check stations. 😁

In TN its anterless or antlered, so make sure you keep the head.

When you think about it, the entire tradition of dragging deer out vs. quartering/deboning is localized. In Alaska, we cut up on the spot. Out west, the same unless it dropped where you have vehicle access.

They used to weigh every deer brought out at a WMA, but IMO that data is not completely accurate because every deer is gutted differently by folks.

I think BSK still weighs all their deer undressed. I guess they want to analyze stomach content and maintain consistent records or not encourage scavengers.

All I know is there is a huge difference between dragging a 120 lb dressed buck and a 178 lb buck.

You should be fine as long as you have proof of sex, but you are correct in needing to contact the local manager to be positive.

The rules are different for different locations.... For example, in Colorado, the tag has to go on the MEAT, not the antlers. Proof of sex must remain naturally attached to one of the hind quarters as well.

I think most wardens are willing to give some leeway, and I doubt you would get ticketed for attaching the tag to the antlers in Colorado, but it is imperative you know for certain what is required for whereever you are hunting, as ignorance may not be excused.

In Tennessee, I'm not dragging a deer... When I kill one, I immediately check in on my phone. If I can drive a vehicle to it, I retrieve it whole and take home for live weight. If I can't drive to it, I break it down, pack the meat out, and leave the rest of the carcass.
