Hello all. I'm going to sound very stupid asking this. Just won a Mossberg 300 Winmag. I have NO clue what scope to get for it. I imagine my maximum range needed would be 250-300 yards. And that's probably pushing it! More realistically 150-200. What are some recommendations?

What's your budget?

I would say $650 is the max.

Lots of great scope possibilities in that price range. I really like the Vortex Razor HD LH for a hunting scope. They are on sale at SWFA right now.

I really like the 3-15x42. Three on the low end is perfect for hunting and having 15 power is nice if you ever need it. I also really like the G4 reticle.

Re: Optic recommendations?

Pick any good quality 3x9 scope. At the distances you mentioned there is no need to go above 9X.

Identifying a specific buck or differentiating a small spike from a doe from 300 yards on 9x would be a chore.

Disagree 100% on that specific statement. In addition, at 300 yards a quality set of binos (or spotting scope  ) would be a better tool for the job.

This is just my opinion but a scope is an aiming device and therefore the following attributes should take precedence: zero retention, erector travel, reticle, return to zero and tracking. Glass quality is fairly decent amongst most of the major scope manufacturers but you can go alpha level glass for a premium price with the features I previously mentioned.

Glass and magnification is more important in binoculars and spotting scopes, which excel at allowing you to locate and judge animals. Yes, you can use a scope for this purpose as well but it really should not be it's primary job... something I personally feel a lot of hunters don't understand.

Since the OP is mounting a scope on a 300 WM, he should determine what his priorities of a scope are.

Just my 2 cents.

It appears that you have misconstrued my statement on several levels. I do not recommend that a hunter use his rifle optic as a primary optic. Personally I could not pick out a 2" spike at 300 yards with a 10x scope. My binoculars are 8x, so that would not help. I don't believe you'll find many eastern whitetailers who would carry larger than 10x binos or a spotter. When rifle hunting, if I see a deer that I may want to shoot, I'm looking at it through my scope instead of my binoculars because you never know when your opportunity will disappear.

The qualities you mention to look for in a quality optic are correct, but luckily those qualities and magnification are not mutually exclusive. I have a 4.5-30x scope that has great glass and mechanics.

My point is you can utilize your optic for more than putting a crosshair on an animal. I would recommend a 4.5-14 or 3-15x. If budget allows, it makes since to opt for 6x extra magnification.

Re: Optic recommendations?

Some of the considerations that I don't ever see mentioned are how big a guy are you. If your smaller guy the recoil is going to affect you more and a long eye relief scope is better for a little guy. I mean it is good for anybody. but it's going to push you around more than it would have big guy. How old are you? Do you wear glasses? If you're an older guy your eyes are going to be going to be changing. A fast focus is really good for us older guys. have you shot the gun yet? does it have a good trigger? are you going to be happy with the gun before you spend money on a scope to put on it. I would take the gun out and try it with whatever scope I had on hand to make sure that I was going to be satisfied with the feel and fit of it before I poured a lot of money into it

Well, then I guess whatever works for you. Good luck hunting out west.
