What are my options for using an older 1100 with modern non-toxic shots? I know steel will ruin the barrel. Are there any other options or is the barrel junk for waterfowling?

You may look into a replacement barrel if you like the gun (which you should). That would probably be a cheaper alternative than a new gun. With that said, I'd probably want to protect the wood stocks and get a gun that I didn't care to use as a boat paddle or beat down brush if I had to.

You can shoot the soft non-toxics but after 2 seasons you would have spent so much $$$ on ammo you could have bought a new barrel. Cabelas has factory barrel for $200-$250 I think.
