I was close enough to spit on 8 different bears last week. Unfortunately I didnt see a boar over 300 lbs so I came home without killing one.
I hate bears!

What has always amazed me about a bear is how nimble they are. We have some big black bears here and to see them go up a tree from branch to branch is like watching a ballet. It's crazy.

After all this discussion, I hate them even more.
Stir that pot brother.... I'm looking at the comments, and stepped away. I'm not that Meat Eater dude, but I'm pretty sure bear meat, today, is kinda like (worse than) pig in the 70's.....
And I know folks who know what I am saying.... There is a time and place and way for everything-best to be aware, Period. Cook it proper.
Will I eat it-yes. As sausage, as in, well done. Or, maybe..., beard oil. :D

I have had chickens here for over 20 years, turkeys, quail, pheasants, all yummy. The coop has never been broken in to. The run is pretty much bear proof. When you live in the wilderness areas like I do in Colorado, you prepare for these things or you don't. Just like any other wooded/wilderness area. Ain't the bears fault. We have bear, coyotes, bobcats, mt. lions, elk, deer, antelope, cats, dogs, gofers, prairie dogs, Eagles, Hawks, Buzzards, etc. Apparently they were here before we moved in. I've got deer and elk and bear on this property on a constant rate all year long, however, I don't hunt on my property. Not until SHTF.
Why complain about something that has been around probably longer than man and is just part of nature itself.
Now, that being said, like mankind, animals need to be kept in check, so they don't overpopulate, inbreed, or they will become disease ridden, and become extinct.
Happy hunting this year sir. Fill those tags because that is some good and healthy eating.

We aren't Colorado with lots of acreage where people dont live. I wish it was. But the fact remains that we have too many bears in populated areas. Not the bears fault. We just have too many protected areas where hunting isn't allowed. Too many because we over protected them. They aren't the issue. Our management practices are. They are unafraid of humans and interactions are not their fault. But, the women in the neighborhood I live, which by the way is not wilderness, are concerned enough they dont like going in their yards at night. I know this because we just had a yard sale and at least 4 asked me about the bears. When we see as many bears, or more, from a stand rather than whitetail then there is definitely an issue. You cant prepare for what already is. I agree. When you keep building, not only bears but other wildlife are driven out of their natural habitat, and then problems develop. I guess there are only 2 ways to cure that, deplete the population of the animals or the humans, or both. As long as population and building continue, eventually wildlife will become a problem until extinction. It's going to hit us even in the wilderness areas of the Rockies eventually.
I see your problem, especially the danger to women, children, well actually anyone.
If you think your wildlife management is bad, did you see what a bunch of crazies are wanting to do in Oregon? Google Oregon wants to ban hunting, fishing, ranching, or killing of any animals. This country is totally messed up. Get back to me and tell me your thoughts. Anyway, hope you fill your tags this year. My 2 sons got dear tags, and I was awarded a deer and cow elk tag. Love elk or deer meat.

Look how well that turns out. California mountain lion population exploded. Coyotes in the streets. Fortunately I dont think most of Oregon agrees with it. But they did use some deceptive language to get people who are well meaning to fall for it.

bears move incredible distances looking for food and breeding partners. bears tagged in east TN have been harvested in NC, VA, and GA. they aren't OUR bears.
baiting bears is illegal in TN. just saying... a "baited area" is within a 250 yard radius of bait site.

I believe most reasonable people understand what I meant by our population. I know our reserves were in agreement with North Carolina, by the way eliminated them. We are talking about population dynamics. Not semantics.
Also,any reasonable person would assume he is being sarcastic when he uses the phrase "just sayin".

We're allowed one with a bow, but yes thats really gonna make a dent in the vermin. And No feeders are the last of my concern, its barn doors, tractor seats, lawnmower seats, cattle troughs and water system, mineral tubs, tree stands, blinds, cameras , vehicles, the list goes on and on!!! That state turned loose on us a damn problem we didnt want instead of killing the damn things when they trapped them in sevier county!

My daughter had a small bear open her car door to get the honey bun my grandson didn't finish. (He is 3), so he didn't know not to leave it. That being said this was probably a 2 or 3 year old cub who had already learned to open car doors with the handle. It didn't leave but a tiny scratch this time because her door was unlocked. I dont think he would have stopped if it had been.
bears moved an incredible distance in barrels behind twra trucks!!! Bears didnt all of a sudden start traveling hundreds of miles where they hadnt been in a century. Nc said no more we dont want em, Ga said no more we have enough. Ky said no dont bring anymore same with va, so they just started kicking them out in every rural county within 50-100 miles of catch site . They shouldve been killed instead of spreading them all over the eastern and middle counties creating more problems!!!

A bear took out my new cellular camera today....I hate bears.
If it is one of the ones on @TnYeti place I will do my best to get revenge on that bear this year. FYI I'm heading up that way on July 11th to do some relic hunting.

Have fun with that! There are three offenders that I have identified now. TNyeti has started naming them=Groan. Never name your food. He is naming deer too! Let's hope he doesn't start naming the hogs....
He did, Hogzilla. I saw the trail cam pic. I hope to help with both, the hog and bear, population this fall.

The Unicoi bear reserve is full of them. Why they won't allow a quota hunt defies logic. Had one in my front yard this week helping himself to my bird seed, ( see pic in the Why doesn't Tennessee have a spring bear season thread)

Saw a great video of the numerous black bears in & around Mammouth Springs CA & how they handle them. They have local staff that will use increasingly aggressive means to deter bear intrusion in & around the town. Using loud horns, rubber bullets & other means to deter bears from developing habits of visiting garbage cans, bird feeders or even intrusion where people live. The theme seemed to be to use increasingly aggressive means of teaching bears that populated areas are not to be encroached. Those that don't learn are trapped & hauled into wilderness areas. Seems pretty effective. Unfortunately many think seeing bears in our home areas is great & is almost encouraged rather that deterred aggressively.

Well I got in trouble yesterday on Facebook due to my "dislike" of bears. Perhaps it was the fact that a bear had just torn down my game camera, but I digress. There was an incident where a cub was killed by a dumpster lid I think. I think baby bears are cute, and I hate that happened.
What I didn't like was how people equate a bear losing its cub with human losing a child. I mean they are animals. People put humanlike emotions on them. When we had our old coyote hunting club, when we had a professional come in and lecture us, the first thing they told us is "they are not human". Stop trying to think about what a human would do, you need to think about what an animal will do.
They are animals that are out of control. There are too many of them now especially in areas near Gatlinburg. I personally think the solution is to encourage more hunting of them. That was where the Facebook people went nuts. Something has got to be done about the numbers of bears. When I see more bears on my cameras than deer, turkey, and hogs, there is a problem.

My feeders weren't for deer, they were for hog hunting. We also had a FDA trap that was baited. Between me and the FDA we have gotten rid of all of the hogs on the property. More them than me.
My feeder is "flown". It is up about 25 feet up in a tree and secured with a 2 ton cable. They still try to climb up there, but they can't walk the wire to the feeder. Right now it is off. Trying to get the bears to move on.
I've actually been there (by accident). Me and the wife were just kinda going shop to shop and I saw a bear on the sign so we just walked in not realizing what it was. We got completely trapped with them showing us all the bears they had rescued and rehabilitated. Meanwhile, literally just a few miles down the road were dozens of pickup trucks with dog boxes in the back.Lol I just got an invite to the Appalachian Bear Rescue! I guess they didn't read me post!
