Although it does have a slight odor, my experience has been that the deer are not alarmed by it. And I've used them since they first came out.

Leaving it on the ground while you are in the tree will not protect you from the insects. Get the holster that is made for the unit and clip it to your stand or a belt loop.

Thermacell is actually one of the last few "gimmicks" that has been introduced into the deer hunting world that really works and is worth it's weight i9n gold when needed.

Thermacell. One of the greatest inventions in the last 20 years. I went to the virgin islands once during the summer and stayed at a camp ground type resort on St John. Basically somewhere between a swamp and rainforest because of high rainfall that year. Mosquitoes were viscious. I was the only person on that side if the island with a thermacell and could have sold it for hundreds of dollars when I tool it to a beach party. It wasnt for sale.

What everyone else said. My Thermacell (with refills) is with me from opening day until the possibility of flying insects is gone.

Most hunts is never gets turned on but for those times when it is needed... Amazing Tool.

Thermacel works great but deer definitely smell it and hear it (when there is little to no wind), I used one last year opening weekend and was surprised how quickly the deer smelled it at 100yds or more, had a couple doe come cross wind to me at 15 yds and stood there staring up at me when I was on the other side of the tree and not visible, if you use it be more cautious of wind direction than ever, they'll bust you before you knew they were within 200 yds, I will take mine but only use it if I am able to not ruin the hunt or educate the animals when doing so

Good point but when I turned it off and put it in my backpack the deer down wind of me that came in later were fine, I can certainly smell it and hear it, it does keep the bugs off better than anything I've ever seen

If you have Permethrin in your clothes you won't have to worry about the smell from a Thermacell. The Permethrin smell alone will be bad enough.
There is NO product that is odorless.

The water based Permethrin such as the Sawyer's brand is odorless once it dries. The petroleum based Permethrin used on livestock is not.
