See this all the time in FB. Can't get them into ethical distances so instead of working on your craft I'll just build my gun to shoot farther. I guess 60-70 is the new 30-40

I know what you mean. I'm 30 and when I hear people talking about how this new generation is ruining the sport, I tend to agree with them. Then I remember that, mathmatically I'm part of that generation. But I don't like it.

What was once a unique hunting sport (requiring unique hunting skill sets) is transforming more into just another shooting sport requiring no particular shooting skills.

Worse, turkeys have gone from wild game worthy of conservation
to just another target, once they're all shot up, easily replaced by some other target?

Not sure the choice of choke, shells, blind, or preferred plastic flock o dekes cost but the price for whole turkeys (even flash frozen as I understand), from Kroger or Piggly Wiggly is right reasonable these days.

Might could save a few bills, it's just as sporting, and yields the same outcome.

Maybe I'm the old guy at 46 but it's become a shooting sport rather than a hunt. I had the bird I killed opening day at 45 yards and could've killed him many times but wanted him closer. Finally at 36 he was turning to walk so i dropped him. To me the excitement in turkey hunting is getting close. To each their own I guess.

One thing you need to think about with things like this is a internet pissing match. They could be the same guys that call 2 pound bass 6 pound bass, shoot deer at 100 yards and say 300 yards. If you catch 30 bluegills they catch 33. So they could be shooting 30 yard turkeys and calling it 50 and so forth.

I'm wishing we had shot further out. 2 misses this past weekend were at birds at 10 to 12 yards that would have been slam dunks at 35.

But I understand what you are saying... we passed up a couple shots in the 45 yd range on birds that outsmarted us.

The kill at all costs mentality has replaced the sheer enjoyment of the hunt itself. It's really ok to eat tag soup if the bird outsmarted you, and it makes the legit kills so much more special.

To me the excitement in turkey hunting is getting close.

I feel this way about the game animals I pursue with weapon in hand. I personally don't feel as if I am giving my opponent the proper respect they deserve by killing from a great distance. For me I find more satisfaction in knowing my skills were superior to the prey I am battling against.

I think part of my issue is why would you want to shoot one that far out? I mean I could have tagged out here in 4 days with 60yd shots. Heck I passed on 2 this morning at 55yds. Just seems odd to me is all. 60 yds is a long ways at a small target

Same here. My farm has a bunch of fields and I've passed no fewer than 6 LBs this spring that were within killing range but I just didn't want to shoot him that far.

This is the first year I have carried a rangefinder turkey hunting...and actually use it. When I set up in a place that could afford a little bit longer shot I range a target to establish my limit and if he doesn't walk inside that, he wins that round.

Many of us experience this every year, finding it remarkably easy to kill 4 longbeards within the first week or two of the season, provided you don't care how you kill them.

You, like me and many others, want it to be a turkey hunt, not a turkey shoot.

Although I'd like the discussions to become more about hunting than shooting,
imo, it requires more shooting skills to kill a turkey at 15 yards than it does at 50 (and beyond).

Who can't basically just shoot something the size of a large box with a shotgun at 50 yards?
At 50 yards, a turkey dropping his head makes no difference, but can cause a complete miss at 15.
And the simple movement of a finger, a hunter's eyelid, can spook at turkey at 15, but not so much at 50.

Most of these guys probably sit it in a blind on a field and wait for the turkey to come to them. Just my opinion, but there is no woodsmanship or effort in that way of hunting. Just not my style of hunting. If you want to feel a rush and an accomplishment, get in the woods, use the lay of the land to your advantage, find their bedroom and set up before daybreak, and kill one strutting on a ridgetop with a half dozen hens surrounding you. That is turkey hunting in my book. :super: :super:

If any decent turkey Hunter does his part and gets the bird to come in. You can kill that bird Everytime at 30 yards or less. 99% of my birds have been killed at 30 yards or less. I've killed two this year and both were at 20 yards and would have came closer if I would have let them!!!!

You're just starting to? I've concluded most people are ignorant on hunting and shooting that I've talked to over the past few decades. That's not a knock on them personally as they tend to be good folks but they either get their info/knowledge from TV killers or regurgitate what they read in a magazine or from a buddy. Every time I go to a gun range I scratch my head in disbelief.

Could have shot 6 jakes yesterday and today at 7yds lol. Both of mine so far have been field birds at 30 and 36yds. Hopefully I can get on some woods birds for the 20yd sweet spot

Two of my shots this year were at 10-12 yards, .410/archery range for sure. I prefer 20-25 yards for a wider, more forgiving pattern, but when they are that close with little to no foliage, you pull the trigger as soon as you get a clear shot.

I had one at 8 yds spitting and drumming, but didnt get him. Longest shot this year was a whopping 35 yrs. But I'm just hunting with a 20g.

If I wanted to kill one over 50yds, I'd prob hunt with a scoped .22 and shoot them in the eye. Way more ethical than a shotgun over 50 yds.
