Re: Need input & advice

Its just so tempting to try and get something going but I think a better answer is try to get it ready for fall.

Moving is work enough and two yards on top, I dunno. What I would suggest is maybe a pumpkin patch. Seeds need to have sprouted by 4th of July for 10/25 harvest. Remember to hand-pollinate and pinch off buds over two-3 per vine. Fewer if growing big boys, something I have done and truly enjoyed. Needing help to pick your produce is a wonderful thing.

Cantaloupe sure sounds good also.

Charleston Gray melon I think is a summer variety but best check.

If you're going to have that much time to prep, just lay down some cardboard as mulch over the area you plan to convert into garden space.

Hadn't had a chance to mess with it besides laying down cardboard. I did talk to my neighbor who has a garden and she said she gave up on growing squash because of the bore Beetles , which has been my experience in this area as well. It's very disheartening to have your pumpkins wiped out by those wretched Things. Think I might just wait and do winter greens.

Ah, the squash vine borer... I'm trying one of these this year (see link below). We'll see how it does. Apparently just one trap is supposedly effective on over an acre and then some.

heartbreaking, ain't it?
The first one not really, the second one sucks, the third one now I'm pissed, but after six I'm rolling around in the dirt throwing a childish tantrum. Death to all moths.

Need input advice

I am looking for the experience of some leek growers. I planted my leeks as transplants in spring and now i have some pretty big ones and a few have flower/seed pods im unsure on the a long stem coming from the plant. Does this mean i need to harvest them now? Please can someone give me a bit of guidance as i will need to do it at the weekend if so. Also is blanching necessary?

Thanks

your plants have bolted. Flowers on a stalk, seed pods, yep. Sorry, any that don't have that look and are otherwise ready to harvest you best be at it.
