Smokeless
I've had good luck out of the H&R conversions. Slufoot is the man to do the breech plug work. Last one I sent him was $110 for the plug work, including return shipping. Breech plugs are $30ish from Luke at Arrowhead Sporting Goods. http://smokelessmz.com/upgrades.html

Once you go Smokeless, you'll try to convince everyone you know to throw their smokers away and convert.

Agree with Rubberduck. H&R is probably your cheapest route unless you already have an Encore. If you happen to have an H&R now of some caliber, you can send it to H&R to get a 45/70 barrel put on. I just converted an H&R for my son (few threads below), and it is a shooter from what I can tell so far. Slufoot from Doug's message board did mine. It cost me $110 plus shipping to him and the $30 Savage breech plug.

I have an Encore conversion, and my bnl has an Apex conversion. Both shoot good as well.

I would say those are the top 3 45-70's converted.

In no special order.

H&R
T/C Encore
CVA Apex

For a new purchase. I like budsgunshop.com or grabagun.com

Apex would be the top of the line conversion IMO. I also have a cva stalker that shoots very well with Knurled bullets. It's SS and I believe you can get em for $3-400 new. I think I might be the only one who has one but it suits me well.

Slufoot is the man for the conversion as stated above. He does excellent work and turnaround time is excellent.

I knurl mine a little. It's not necessary but gives a snugger fit. Roll bullet between 2 Rosie O'Donnell files. It helps expand the bullet a little.

Yes I still use sabot.

.45's seem to be the most simplistic (less fussy) guns out there.
