Need advice on Sabot Slugs

I've had great results from rem core lokt in 12 and 20ga, only used 2 3/4. They are pricey if you can find them.

I have 7 boxes of 12ga that I bought before I switched to a 20ga. If you'd like to give them a try let me know.

Basic informantion on shooting from over the years is that the sabot slugs need a rifled barrel, and that the smoothbore slug barrels actually shoot the Foster type of slugs better.

I have read good things about the Remington solid copper sabot loads in the fully rifled barrels.

I have the fully rifled barrel, just trying to gain some knowledge on what works best for some and hopefully what are reasonable expectations. Is it reasonable to expect good accuracy out to 200yds with a sabot slug and fully rifled barrel and if so which slugs seem to perform best in accuracy and performance on deer.

The articles I have read put good slug accuracy in the 125-150 yard range. If I were hunting one of the shotgun/muzzleloader states like IL and wanted a 200 yard rifle, I'd go with the Savage MLII. My guess is you will find something that is good to around 125 yds and will have the advantage of multiple shots.

You will need to test different types of slugs in your gun. Some will shoot great and others will be all over the target. When you finally find that round that works in your gun, stick with it.

I limit my shots to 125 yds with my slug gun. I am very confident they will do their job out to that range, but They lose so much after that distance I do not want to risk it.

Like SCN said, I like the remington copper solids.

Some good advice here.THE 2 3/4 mid velocity,1250fps to 1600fps seem to shoot well in all of my slug guns. But i did try the 3in Remington Aero Tip.The one with the funny looking green tip and it shoots well out of my 1187 slugster.Shooting well with my slug guns are 3in groups at 100 yards.200 yards usually about 8-9 in groups and they will be a lower point of impact.

Good luck.My shoulder hurts just thinking of shooting a slug.

Thanks this is the kind of info I am looking for.

Does anyone prefer the slugs with the ballistic tips? I have always liked the barnes bullets so I was gonna try these and I hear good things about the Hornady bullets also. I actually have shot the Hornadys out of a 20ga H&R didnt like the gun. Slugs are so expensive I just dont want to go buy a bunch and then decide I dont like them. I got a buddy who also likes the Copper Solids.

Out of my Mossberg 695 - I found that the Lightfield hybrid exp slugs 2 3/4 grouped the best. Other slugs were all over the paper including the 3" Lightfields.

I have taken 4 deer with the Lightfield slugs from about 30 yards out to 120 yards and they performed great.

I believe someone else nailed it though - you will need to shoot several different brands to see what works best for your gun.

Best of luck.

Another tip, the sabot slugs will leave plastic fouling in the barrel that can cause your groups to expand after several shots. I've found its good to at least brush out the barrel after 5-6 shots to keep the groups tight. I went through a bunch of slugs and money trying to site in before a friend gave me this tip.

THanks

I've shot both the Hornady SST and Remington Copper Solids out of my 870 with a rifled barrel. I didn't see much of a difference in the groups between the two slugs and feel the Copper Solids have better knockdown power.

This is a Remington factory barrel right? Call Remington. They helped me with a 20 ga way back when selecting slugs.

I have heard DDUPLEKS slugs are devastating and very accurate. Like everything else I see mixed reviews for same equipment using same slugs. Gonna have to shoot something and see what it likes.

Shoot it at the range the way you hunt with it. HOLD THAT FOREND!

Good to see you on here again, friend...

I saved him a step :) Remington rifled barrels tend to shoot copper solids very well.

Except for the 20 ga. Even Remington said don't waste your money shooting them in a Remington 20 full rifled barrel. They were right but I had already bought the slugs so I had to try them.

I bought three boxes of SST 12 Ga. a couple of years ago when I had a gift card to a local sporting goods shop and will be trying them out either this weekend or next. I'll report back and let you know how those shoot. Anybody have experience with the Hornady SSTs out of a Rem 870 express...22 inch rifled cantilever barrel?

just put my slug gun togther. mossy oak mossberg 535 (adjustable trigger model) with 24" cantilever fully rifle 12 ga barrel. put a high comb stock and added a 2-7x33 leupold. i bought the sst and accutips saboy slugs. will get to shoot next week. cant wait
