I finally caught my first Mobile Bay Unicorn with the help of an old friend who is now dating my sister. He specializes in catching these fish also known as tripletail. This one is no monster at 19.5 inches but over the 18 inch size limit. The bite was very slow unlike the previous weekend when he won 2nd place in the rodeo with a ~25 pound monster. We fished for almost 8hrs and caught just 1 more fish that was undersized.

That's awesome man. I have always wanted to fish for those.

Fishing for them is a lot like hunting since much of the time you see the fish before you try to catch it. Sight-fishing for Bonefishing and Redfishing are similar in that aspect. I remember fishing for blackfish with my dad and uncle when I was a young kid, but I don't thing I ever caught one.

Always found them under anything floating a drift in the Gulf. Pitch a live bait out near the debris and hold on! One the best tasting fish in the ocean.

Yea ship channel buoys, pylons, crab trap floats and anything relatively small floating are typically where blackfish are caught. They avoid large structures like oil rigs parked boats and seawalls for some reason.
