I went hunting yesterday afternoon to a new farm I got this year. I have only walked the property one time so I do not know it very well. I pulled in at 12:30 and to my surprise 2 does were out in the field to my right. I'm thinking it is going to be a good day. I get dressed and put my climber on my back, ( an old heavy API), my back pack on my front, and grab my bow. I head up the ridge towards a giant oak that I spotted last time I walked the property. The wind was perfect to hunt that area. I entered the woods close to the oak and got about 10 yards off the side of the ridge and I see a persimmon on the ground with deer sign everywhere., I look up and sure enough 2 trees there loaded with them. I knew the big oak was another 6o yards or so down the ridge so my plan was to try to get in between the persimmons and the oak. I see the tree I want to climb. The only problem is that it had a huge vine growing up it. Determined to hunt out of that tree I pulled the vine away from the trunk and pulled out my knife to attempt to cut it. I ended up cutting a huge chunk out of my thumb and bleeding everywhere. The bleeding would not stop so I cut the sleeve out of my shirt and wrapped it up. While all of this was going some deer must have heard me and came up to check things out. I heard all kinds of commotion and deer blowing. I looked down the ridge and saw 3 sets of antlers and a few other unidentified deer running off. I knew they did not wind me so I was thinking maybe they will come back. I got the bleeding stopped, found another tree, and got settled in it around 2. I sat there until there was no more shooting light in the canopy on the side of the ridge only seeing 1 small 8 point. On the way back to the truck I saw something standing in the gap of trees not 30 yards from my truck. With shooting light fading quickly the stalk was on. I managed to get within 30 yards of the doe, but it had just got to dark for me to attempt an ethical shot. I waited for her to leave then headed home worn out from the walk, sore from the cut, and depressed for the way things went down. I took a lot away from this hunt though. Always let someone know where you are going and make sure your phone is charged. You can get in trouble in a hurry. Although I only cut my finger it took me forever to get it to stop bleeding. If I would have cut something worse I would have needed help being so far away from my truck.

Maybe the deer will settle down and I didn't spook them too bad. The ones I saw running off looked like good ones. I just hope I didn't mess it up for the hole year. I am encouraged by the deer I saw, but at the same time worried.

Man that is tough. Better luck next time. Also get a hand saw and keep it in your pack. you can cut through the vines and small limbs pretty quiet with them and you most likely will not cut your hand.

I hope that vine wasn't poison ivy...better luck next time, you only blew it once, the deer will be back. Maybe go in a little earlier next time and be real quiet and they will show up.

Sort of like my Saturday morning but I didn't see any bucks.

I got busted before I could draw back on one of three does. Got down and ended up busting my lip with a dead limb on the ground. So now I'm bleeding and had to cut a poison ivy vine and a limb out of a better tree for next time. It happens.

Did you have to have stitches? I was doing a repair to my ground blind yesterday and GOUGED it with my knife. Luckily duct tape is around. :)

Sorry for your bad day. I no sooner sat down on opening day when I knocked my drink, my snacks, and my rangefinder out of the stand. Unclip, climb down, re-clip. :(

No stiches, it actually cut a chunk off of the side of my finger. Its like I shaved a 1/16th off from my tip to my joint. It bled like crazy.

Wash up good with dawn dish soap and no water when you get home. I started keeping a small bottle in the truck to clean the poison ivy oils off my hands after hunting but it leaked so I have to come up with another plan.

If you get the oil off within a couple hours of exposure you should avoid any reaction.

I carry a small fold out saw and a pair of pruning shears. Shears are quiet and do a good job on most of the stuff I have to trim. Bigger stuff gets the saw.
