My wife wants me to plant a couple of muscadine vines. I read a bit and I think I've decided I'm going to sink 3 cedar posts and run 2 strands of wire across the distance and plant the vines between the posts. Leaning toward the Nesbitt variety.

Anyone have these?
Tips for planting? When to plant?

Here's a great simple overview I used to get started with them.

Fall is the best time to set out new vines.

Ison's Nursery www.isons.com is a great place to get vine stock. They also have lots of free info on their website about muscadines.

Make sure you put a protective cage of chicken wire around the base of your vines or the rabbits will eat them. I learned that lesson the hard way.

I ordered about 10 plants last week from isoms.. i'm wondering why you need wooden post to run the wires between?? wouldnt a steel t- post work just as well?

it doesnt matter what trellis you use. I run 3 lines, some use two. You want them head level for picking. they make great jelly and wine!
