Well after many miles logged on horse and foot we finally got into the elk big time yesterday. Watched a herd of 200 or so elk come out of a irrigated alfalfa field work their way up the mountains from about 2 miles away.We watched very nervously for 30 mins trying to decide are they coming up our drainage or do we need to move. They finally committed to their route and luckily it was gonna bring them close enough for a shot hopefully. With 12 or 15 bulls in the herd I picked out the largest one I could find which wasn't easy with that many elk. With the herd at 700 yards I find the bull I had decided on ranged him one last time adjusted the scope the correct amount with a very solid rest over my backpack squeezed the trigger. My 30 year old dream of killing a bull was realized. The herd didn't have a clue what happened and ran straight up the mountain to us.The kid that was with me grabbed my rifle and killed another nice bull.It was the most intense 30 minutes of hunting I have ever been a part of.
