For his 18th birthday in October he wanted a bow. A new bow. A Hoyt Carbon Turbo Spyder. With it he needed arrows. Good ones. Managing how an arrow flexes in flight is the key to accuracy and these Carbon Express Maxima REDS cost $12 a piece. (and a big shout-out to Greg Hoskins at the Outdoor Connection in Crossville for hooking me up) Okay, done. He had been using his brother, Hunters, bow for years and it was time to shoot something he called his own. The Hoyt Carbon Spyder Turbo is not cheap. It is more expensive than the previous Hoyt carbon bows but with that being said, there is nothing like the Carbon Spyder Turbo. This speed rig is offered with arrow speed at over 100 yards per second. Is it worth the extra money? Only one person knows the answer to that question. Jordan had been practicing diligently and is a great shot. I felt he was good to at least 60 yards if not 70 under very ideal conditions.
Mature whitetail deer seldom hang with the opposite sex during the year. The exception is during the November rut. It is the time to be in the woods if you are a deer hunter. We have trail cameras out in our backyard from July on. We have pictures of some tremendous bucks, the biggest of which generally show up in August never to be seen again. We thought this year was going to be the same. This buck was the biggest we had pictures of and this was the last picture we had of him on September 24th.
With Jordans busy schedule he doesnt have much time to be in the woods. He plays a mean safety position on the Milton H.S Eagle football team. The team was the Region Champion and Friday night they won their first playoff game in school history. It is a great team, great coaches, great parental involvement and only getting better. I am proud to be a small part of the effort.
I had been gone last week to our ranch in Montana. The Ghost Ranch as we call it provides a great escape to nature and last week was no exception. Last summer we ran trail cameras on the ranch and had a picture of a great buck in velvet.
I was fortunate to kill this great buck that had a wide rack, 22 inches wide to be exact. He was a great animal and will taste mighty good.
I had been trying to find this buck but to no avail. Had plenty of pictures of him last summer but they just disappear in Montana, just like ghosts.
After filling my buck tag the weather got cold, real cold and I went goose hunting. Loaded up about 65 decoys and headed out in the field west of the house.
Had good shooting on some hungry birds and filled my limit before I froze!
After getting back from Montana Jordan and I were anxious to get some bow hunting in. Football only allows him to be in the woods on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Thursday night he thought he had seen a good buck and Saturday night he was thrilled to spend 20 minutes watching a big 6 point whitetail buck chase some does. Another big buck that we have had on camera all year. Jordan was holding off for Mr. Big and well, waiting paid off. He had a tremendous weekend going already as he was accepted into the University of Georgia on Friday, won the football game Friday night and finished up with a great buck on Sunday night. I know he appreciates all that has happened to him and proud that he is smart enough to know that it all doesnt come without hard work.
Here is Jordans fine Georgia whitetail buck. It ran 10 yards after Jordan put a clean pass-through shot on it. A major artery was severed and this buck toppled over extremely fast.
He was a mature buck that was running a doe 30 yards in front of Jordans tree. This is the second buck that Jordan has taken from that tree and its on a great trail in a very transitional area between thick bedding cover and open acorn feeding areas.
I hope that the playoff picture continues to get brighter for my son and his team. Most of all I pray for his health and safety. The hard work in the weight room year round has paid off. From here on out they gotta get it done. I reckon Jordan got it done this year in the hardwoods. What a buck!
Its been a good year. I think the best is yet to come. Thanks for coming along!
