Those of you that use them and believe in them, Would it be to early to start the 3rd week of September?
I've got a couple places that I'm going to get to hunt this year in Southern Illinois and I'm going up there September 21 for a final scout trip.

I won't return until the last week of October to hunt. Would like to put out some mock scrapes with a trail camera over them but I didn't know if its to early.
Thoughts ??

I've saw scrapes as early as the first week of September. I wouldn't use doe estrous but you might try some buck urine or those scrape generator strips. Dad has had luck out of using them...think Primos makes em.

I probly wouldn't do it. Deer use scrapes yr round, however they typically aren't pawed out... I have places that I know primary scrapes exist and I put cameras on them this early but I don't add scent or rake back the leaves...

I usually make one on opening day every year.I paw out a spot with my rubber boots and pee in it myself. The deer always use it.It definately works and won'thurt a thing imo.

X2

I started one last season and kept it going at every visit to the area. There is now a trail crossing the ridge right next to it.

I've successfully made mock scrapes for trail-camera placement in mid-September. I would have at it. Normally I start making mock scrapes for camera placement in early October, but a week or two earlier would be no problem. As long as the bucks are out of velvet.

What if you drink a little "Doe in Estrus" just before you pee in the scrape??

Ummm, have at it and let us know how that goes!

Actually, scrapes are far more about male-to-male communication rather than male-to-female. That's why making mock scrapes with a man's urine is so much more successful than with a woman's urine.

Let her rip, once you get it started the bucks will usually take over and keep them open!

Yep ! Do it , do it !!!!!!

I tried drinking straight vinegar for a while to lose weight - couldn't be much worse than that. The bad thing is that it would probably work about as well too. :(

I just don't believe in mocking scrapes and it is certainly rude to pee on them. Just think how the scrape must feel. I know it even makes me mad when Im pee on myself.

Since scrapes are primarily a male to male thing I wonder if you can buy testosterone in any form (liquid, powder, etc.) for use in scrapes. Mine still works but she ain't what she used to be.

Well I've been corrected. I had a camera on a trail where a primary scrape exists. When I checked the camera today it had been recently opened up.. It had fresh toe marks and loose dirt and had a hand full of bucks on camera there

That would make for an interesting experiment.

Although, you could just hire a college-age guy to follow you around and pee in your scrapes! ;)

Although not deer related, I once saw fishing show guru Hank Parker take a big swig of glitter infused spray fish bait.
He was truly hating life for a LONG time as the glitter found every nook and cranny in his mouth.

Is the activity you see at these scrapes usually made at night? I have seldom seen bucks at scrapes in daylight. What percentage of activity and visits occurs during the day?

Most scrape visits occur at night. Daylight scraping peaks just before breeding explodes, but even at that time, most scraping is done at night.

I don't make mock scrapes for hunting over but for putting cameras over.

i have a scent drip bag i was thinking about using but have never used one. any advice on using one of those?

Why use one? Just pee in the scrape and let the bucks take it over.

What if you dropped a deuce in one? LOL

I don't think #2 serves quite the same purpose, but I had a brother-in-law who arrowed a nice buck as the buck was sniffing a still steaming pile of human poop.

Although I don't recommend that as an attractant...
