Who makes the best merino wool base layer? I am thinking about getting some. I have Cabelas ecwcs polar weight and it just doesn't keep me warm on stand. I am almost 57 and have more trouble staying warm every season. Also need something that is not a compression fit as I have a little extra belly! lol

Woolpower 400/600 gram jackets or long johns

I haven't tried every brand, but I wear First Lite stuff and have no complaints.

Well, the Obsidian pants have the durability of tissue paper, but the base layers are awesome.

Love my First Lite furnace... Got the 1/4 zip top so I could dump some heat.

Another vote for First Lite Furnace top and bottoms. Gonna set you back a pretty penny but worth it I think. If you don't have the ability to stay warm on a cold day then your hunt is over before it starts.

How do the FL base layer sizes run? I'm about 6', 200lbs and usually wear an XL - can't stand things to fit tight. Looking at the FL website a lot of people about my size say a Large fits just right.

I like first lite. Furnace series. Expensive also.

Think I recognize that logo from the meateater series?

I believe Steve bought the company or something along those lines. I know he has ties to it. But it's excellent quality stuff. Very warm.

Yes you should be fine I am 6'2" 185lb and the large fit perfectly the top stays tucked in and the legs are long enough to stay down. The furnace series is a lot better design than the first set of merino wool base layers I had from first lite as far as fit. Just dont put in dryer let it air dry when you wash :tu:

Nothing like buying a merino layer and it shrinks up above your belly button. I know.

 Bull moose learned same as me lol

SmartWool all the way for me. Can usually find it on sale this time of year at backcountry or steepandcheap.

Do yall wear the FL Furnace next to skin? FL website makes it sound like a second layer with lighter layer under the furnace.

I don't I wear the wick ultra light 150 aerowool under it. If it's real cold I wear short sleeve and long sleeve wick under it. It is expensive but since I switched to First Lite last year I have not had to leave the tree because Im cold yet!

You can do either one. Sometimes I wear a Chama as a first layer, and sometimes I layer a thinner merino piece under it.

Somebody posted a great deal link for some Nomad merino wool bass layers and other stuff about three years ago. I bought a set for me and a set for my son. It was some crazy low price and I have loved that set...wish I had bought two for what I paid.

So what's first lites second layer that anyone would recommend? Either new products or past versions of first lite gear for second layer. Looking to buy some

I'm on year 3 with obsidian pants, and they're literally falling apart. I've worn them on every hunt during that time, but I'm still not impressed with their durability. I don't know what I'll get next. I wear FL allegheny base bottoms, formerly obsidian pants, and Cabelas MT050 Whitetail Extreme pants over them.

Same here. It's been a great set and I'd love to have two more and a smaller set for my son. I don't think they make that set anymore. We got them at closeout pricing.
