Opinions on lowest recoiling 20 gauge, that will chamber a round that would be effective on turkeys? I shoot an 870 12, 3". I have a NEF 20(mod) as a knock-around gun, and IMO it kicks harder than my 12. My wife shot this gun one time, and says "no more". I'm looking for the mildest kicking gun that I can find for her next season, and I presume that it would be some sort of gas operated auto-loader. Has anyone had any experience with such a gun?

You would just have to shoot them, too many other factors, but I guess a semi auto would likely be lightest in the recoil dept.

The problem with most 20 gauges is the fact that they are lighter than most 12s. IMO a 6 lb 20 gauge kicks like a mule. A gas gun will help, but if its a light one, it will still kick. You could add weight to the gun, or find a heavier 20 gauge. I can shoot my 8lb 12 gauge all day with heavy target loads, but after 100 rounds with my 20 gauge, Im ready to go to the house. They are both Beretta 303s.

4onaside,

I have a different suggestion.

Let her shoot your 12 ga.
You carry it for her, but let her shoot it.

Do a little pattern testing with what we used to just call "high brass" 1 1/4 oz 12 ga. loads.

I can almost guarantee you it will kick less than many 20 gauges.

If the kick still seems a bit much to you, just switch over to some #6 shot 1 1/8 oz rabbit loads. Can almost guarantee you they'll still be deadly on turkeys out to 35 yards.

Right under my nose, wasn't it Wes? Since I hunt most of the time in an enclosed blind, just use what I always refered to as a "squirrel load", 2 & 3/4 high brass 6#s, both of us sitting in camp chairs, hand her the 870, even give her a rest, and tell her to break his neck. At that point, most of us don't feel any recoil anyway. The beauty of a forum. Throw something out, and many times someone will point out the obvious that the writer has overlooked. lol

I think a lot of people have gotten caught up in the hype of magnum turkey loads.

My 835ultramag shoots 2-3/4 low brass #6 in a scary dense pattern out to 35 yards. Im talking every pellet in a 8" circle. It literally punches a softball size hole in my cardboard targets with little recoil and a lot less muzzle blast.

The 3" #6 Turkey load I am using now gives me a lot more pellets and a decent pattern with "enough" kill pellets to be satisfied, but it is no where near a dense a pattern as the low brass. Muzzle blast and recoil are fierce too!

Too bad I am out of the low brass and don't remember the manufacturer. I would buy a case in a heart beat and be set for life on turkey loads.

Pricy but my daughter loves hers. By the way she is 19.

I'm sure that this is a state of the art shotgun, worth every penny. If that's someone's bag. But two grand for a shotgun ain't our style. lol
