My buddy mentioned today that all the deer he has seen this year have made more noise walking than normal. I think I agree with him. I have seen a few I thought were squirrels because they were so loud. He blames the drought for crunchier (is that a word) leaves. Any thoughts?

Makes sense to me. It definitely is crunchier out in the woods which I feel is beneficial so a deer can't sneak by you. But all the crunching I've heard so far has been confirmed squirrel crunching.

I have seen very few does this year. Mostly bucks. And while bucks , especially mature bucks, are harder to get a glimpse of, I think they are more noisy once they commit to going somewhere. Does are especially quite and I think part of the reason is they try to slip around the woods without a buck noticing them and harassing them this time of year

Woods and even grown up fields are much louder than normal with the extreme dry year we are having. Deer make more noise than usual just like you do when walking.

A "slinking" deer makes little to no noise under almost any conditions. Otherwise a deer just moving should be making more noise under these extremely dry conditions. You want some practice at hunting silent deer... go hunt a pine thicket any time.
