Been thinking about getting in the AR world. See many and many diff prices. Seems walmart has good base model set for modification. Id like to have something like a varmint AR setup. Makes I see most are DPMS, Bushmaster, Daniel Defense, Rock River. What is the key areas to look into on them? Seems the uppers are where the variations and price has the biggest jump. Anything you would like to throw out here Im more than happy to read no matter how little or how much.

I have a bushmaster & like it because the carry handle will come off & a scope can be mounted. If I had to do over I would want a complete flat top that I could put flip up sites on it in case I didn't want to use the scope. My front sight is a standard post . A rifle with no sites on it & a low gas block would allow a variety of site/scope options /combo's

For hunting, I'd make sure to take weight into consideration. After that it's basically a matter of how much you want to spend. You can build your own and make it exactly like you want it or buy one and change what you want.A good barrel and trigger are the most important features I look for.The ones you listed are fine for what you're wanting to do.

This.

Well it depends on what you want to do with it. You say varmint hunting and if that means prairie dogs then the AR that is optimum will look and weigh more(plus may be another caliber other than .223) than an optimum coyote rifle. ARs are very versatile and can be configured in many different forms according to function. I use my ARs for coyotes and deer-they are handy, short, light by AR standards, accurate, and fast handling. I don't like, rails, lights, bells, whistles, and all the mall ninja crap that can be hung on one. But that's me. I do generally upgrade the trigger as that is simple and varies from inexpensive to expensive depending on wants and/or needs. Here is one of my very handy hunting ARs. This one happens to be in 6x45 with a 16" barrel. The rifle can also serve for homeland defense as/is or another upper can be pinned on quickly that has buis and a red dot. Ymmv

When I say varmint its more on the lines of predator. 280 that is a good option too glad you posted that. PH you pic is what i had in mind. I dont need a SWAT equipped one just a simple AR with a scope. yours looks really nice. Would you care to provide some details on it and estimated cost?

Also one I just ran into is one with the poly lower. Im not a real big fan of the poly I have a Taurus Judge thats poly. I know this is whats is being produced now days. What is everyones input on the poly.

Well this is a complete Palmetto State Armory blemish(couldn't find a single flaw) lower with Magpul accessories that I bought on sale for $169 plus shipping to my FFL. PSA makes quality products that are super priced when you catch them on sale. PSA has a sale list on their web site and you can check it daily for deals. I bought the complete upper used for $450 delivered that included a set of Redding 6x45 dies. I put in a ALG trigger for $65 and while not light it is crisp with no grit or creep. The scope is a Weaver 2x7 rimfire on yhm riser blocks. You can probably find a complete DPMS Oracle or Sportical upper for $400 or maybe less. A RRA coyote upper would be better but a bit more. Then a decent 2x7 scope can be had for $150 or so if you shop around. This is the sort of hunting rifle that I would put together; but different people have different wants. Oh the poly lowers-seem like they run $100-120 and no way would I buy poly when you can get a PSA Magpul for $60-80 more.

So really building one is the best way to go. It would allow you more options. Buying a complete DMPS or equivalent would be mainly for the lower as most of the investment is in the upper.

I had a Bushmaster built Rem R15 that would drive nails,,but I traded it for a Socom 16,,
I would really like a full size rifle 20 inch 6.5 Grendel

These are both put together builds. Bout to put a 18" 1:8 Wilson spr barrel on the bottom one.
You don't really gain anything but looks going with billet uppers and lowers. The pistol (top) has become my favorite field carry, woods hiking gun. Its a 10.5" barrel and runs xm193 55gr fmj at about 2740 fps. The 16" 1:9 barrel (bottom) gets 2960 fps. Dad got me the billet seekins upper for Christmas and I just couldn't bring myself to put it on a forged lower. If I were to buy all the parts I would have went forged. A good stripped upper and lower can be had for $200.

You could probably put together a pretty nice varmint gun for $800 not including optics.

Check out the Rock River Arms. I have a Stag AR-15 and last year bought a Rock Rivers ATH and it is one of the most accurate "out of the box" rifles I've ever owned, I didn't do anything to it except put on a scope.

It has a 18 inch Wylde lipped barrel and a 2 stage trigger.

They have several different models that people use for hunting. Over on Predator Masters web site that brand is the one most brought up when people ask about which AR to get for hunting.

Here's my ATH

I would get a billet matching upper and lower and build it the way you want. That way you'll be 100% happy with it.
lol

?
Sorry, that wasn't helpful. A billet upper and lower are never something I'd recommend to someone wanting to get their feet wet. I see little value added in billet ARs.

Spend your money on a trigger, OP.

Just letting y'all know I'm still listening...think billet is little above what I'm willing to tie up in one. I don't need a Mercedes Benz. Lol
