There are five Blacktails at 30 yards.

Not by my camera or by my wit, only because I seen them moving before I snapped the pic. It makes me wonder how many deer I have overlooked in seasons- past....🤔

Back when I was learning to deer hunt, I was always reading these articles saying to learn to look for pieces of deer. I never found that to be as useful as learning how to train your eyes for movement. Now I sort of "look at nothing" while scanning for movement. In essence, I don't focus my eyes on any one thing and just let me eyes settle into "movement detectors."

Easy to spot them sometimes...lol

Their hides are orange(ish) this time of year, but the "carpet" is still white...she has a set of twins nearby.

We lived in Warrenton, OR for a few years in the 80s and I hunted Blacktails. Tough to spot no doubt. The only one I ever shot was a doe across a clear cut.

Growing up on the outer edge of the nearly endless housing developments of the Bay Area in CA, we always had a summer garden. And in CA, the summers are extremely dry. All of food sources for deer "up in the hills" dry up and deer go looking for alternative foods, which meant our garden. I used to spend evenings shooting deer with a BB gun to get them out of the garden. Those blacktails would make my mom so angry, she would hold the flashlight while I shot the deer in the butt!

Gardens in Blacktail territory take on the appearance of a POW camp, lol.

The best BT call is the sound of a chainsaw...(aka dinner bell).

2025 (edit: 2024) model year..
