So I am wanting to go on a barrier island deer hunt. If I don't get drawn, I have the option of going to an open hunt. Everything I am reading says to bring a lock on stand, not enough straight trees for a climber and you can't cut limbs. You end up having to walk or bike several miles to hunt on the open hunts I'm looking at. So I'm thinking I need a light lock on and light steps of some sort(can't use screw in). I would really prefer to not spend a lot on this because it's literally the only time I ever see myself using that kind of setup, perhaps it would become an annual thing though, I don't know. I've also read ground hunting is not a good way to go due to the thickness. Any ideas from the crowd?

I have a Big Game aluminum lock on that I use when my climber won't work. Very light and easy to pack in and it was very affordable on Amazon. I have different steps that I use but BG makes some that nest on the stand so you can carry it all in as one piece. Lone Wolf sticks also nest well on the stand.

A bunch on the market and I personally don't have enough experience to recommend any particular brand. For the most part, any of them will hang in a tree. How to get up a crooked tree is the culprit. I do have experience getting up them. You definitely want a system with shorter sections allowing for tree angles and bypassing limbs that may be in the way. I use Non-Typical rails but they aren't lightweight. If you've never hunted hang-ons before it may open up more opportunities after going on the hunt you're attempting.

If weight is your main concern and being able to get into any tree then the Lone Wolf Assault with 3 or 4 Lone Wolf sticks and you can climb most any tree. The Assault is 11lbs.

I was going to mention a saddle but I have zero experience with them. Do you have any because I am very curios to see how hard was it to make the transition to it from a regular stand. Thanks

I use a modified sit drag similar to an Anderson sling. I was sold the first time I tried it. I sold most of my other stands and hunt from this now. My set up is 10 lbs if I remember right

The LW sticks and stand and/or saddle won't be the cheapest but will be the lightest. From what I have seen on Craigs and other places you can sell them for most of what you have in them for a minimal loss. Got a feeling though that if you do much deer hunting you may keep them if you buy one of these. :D

What's the dates of your hunt?

If I don't have a hunt going on at the time, your more than welcome to use my Lone Wolf sticks and stand.

the draw hunt is 10/20-22 if I get it. The open hunts on a different island are either October 13-15 or December 1-3. Weather would be cooler and less bugs/snakes in December but that hunt isn't nearly as successful so I'm not sure which of those I would pick.

I'm pretty certain I won't need it to hunt where I would on any of those dates. Remind me closer to that time, and we'll meet up to get it to you. I'm working in Powell, so if you're still in Oak Ridge I could run up and let you buy me lunch. I mean, deliver the stand and sticks.
