My son and I have been hitting some private timber every weekend and these farms are loaded with squirrel.Following are some of the tail gate pics from this season so far.

My son shoots a CZ 452 Varmint .22 and feeds it Lapua HV Match hollow points. The glass on it is a Leupold 3x9x40 set from at the factory at 60 yds. A very deadly combo

I also run a CZ 452 but a sporter with a Nikon 3x9x40 Prostaff rimfire on it...it loves the Lapaua ammo as well.We are doing trigger jobs on both of them this weekend and putting Weaver V-16s on them in 4x16x42. Cant wait to squeeze a little more accuracy out of them!

They will flat shoot. By far the most accurate factory rifles I have ever owned bar none. This group was straight out of the box.

In the picture above you will notice a side exit wound on the the 3rd squirrel from the right...this particular squirrel was gnawing on a nut and I centered the cross hairs on that nut and squeezed off the shot. As I was picking him up I saw something fall and heard a odd sound..to my total surprise it was a perfectly formed hollow point mushroomed bullet! A first for me..

Last picture to bore you with...

Added a few to the freezer this am and it was a real struggle.Several bad decisions but we managed to get a few and left plenty for seed! lol
I lied! I almost forgot the best one!! We have been killing some cross bred squirrels. Pretty neat!

We are going to get back after them in the morning...conditions should be perfect

Very good shooting! And a very original story on a bullet, never heard that before. Been thinking about getting a CZ 452. You just made up my mind for me!! If a CZ will shoot that good out of the box, that's the squirrel gun for me. My 10-22 will shoot a group like that, but I like a bolt gun.

That is awesome tar, been reading some of your posts on rimfire central. I am building a 452 American myself, may reach out to you if I have any questions. Thanks for sharing.

I like a bolt gun as well. A word to the wise. Most prefer the "Fixed" barrel 452 over the "switch" barrel 455 that is replacing the 452. I am one of them who prefer the 452. There are still some new 452s available but the supply is drying up. If you truly want one do not DELAY!! I have seen a few on Gunbroker,Whittakers,GunsAmerica....ect. You will not regret it!

Your more than welcome to contact me. I will share what I can. I just picked up a 452 Varmint Mach-2.... :D Going to work it over as well...picking it up from my gunshop in the am....already eye balling a 512....it never ends....lol

Wow. I've always been fascinated by fox squirrels. Here in East Tn they seem to be randomly scattered. Some woods are loaded, others have a few, while others have none. I've often wondered what causes that? That half breed squirrel is neat. Over the years I've killed 2 that appeared to be crossed.

I had a biologist tell me that Fox Squirrels live on the fringes and do not migrate deep into the timber like Greys and that sometimes the habit overlaps. Thats certainly the case here.

I agree. Foxes definitely don't seem to migrate very far. For about 10 years I have hunted these 2 large tracts of land, they are located only 4 miles apart. On the one foxes make up about 50 percent of the squirrel population. On the other I have not seen a single fox in 10 years.

We have a lot of wood lots here to the north and larger tracts of timber to the south..the smaller northern wood lots will contain 95-100% Fox squirrel. As the smaller wood lots or tracts start to transition into the larger timber you will see a mixture of Greys and Fox squirrels and I have seen in the larger tract areas that contain strictly Greys. They seem to be extra wild.

Yeah, I've heard others say foxes really like the small wood lots. I think that's one reason they are more common in Middle and West Tn. Here, the Eastern part of the state is more mountainous, with alot of the larger tracts of forest. Your right, sometimes those grays are much wilder than foxes.

From years of experience I'd say that the fringe theory is correct. I've found fox squirrels on the interior of woods but that's the exception to the rule.

Just wondering, have you ever seen a squirrel migration in Indiana? I've seen a couple here in west Tn. It generally happens in December and you'll see what looks like herds of squirrels on the ground and traveling.

No I have not. They do not have a need to travel here even if the mast fails or is very poor they have plenty of corn and they will eat beans
