Looks like LBL has really dropped the ball on upcoming season. 2 -3 day adult quota hunts ( one prior to state opener) and 6 day open season.
Last year they had 2-2 day adult quota hunts and a 3 week open season.

Need to start letting hunters go up there and lay some scunion down on the hog population. I wonder how much damage those things have done to the population.

LBL is such a heart breaker. I have vivid memories of camping with my wife and new born daughter (10 years ago). I'd get up and hunt a couple hours before they got out of the tent. I honestly cannot remember a hunt where I didn't at least hear one gobble.
Fast forward to last year and I put in countless miles and never once cut a track, let alone hear one.

I am betting both. It is getting overrun with hogs. I see them when I am on the boat fishing with buddy.

I have not seen a turkey in 4 years on our annual weeklong archery hunt in early Nov. I did hear a few hens last fall one morning. I think the hogs are really hurting the population, they will eat anything. The number of hog sightings is thru the roof!

Hogs, habitat loss, and minimal farming would be my guess. The hogs are running rampant down there, cannot even hike a trail without seeing sign or an actual hog and the tornados and big storms we have had the last 4-5 years have hurt the hardwoods. I remember 20-30 years ago that place used to be pristine with farming and agriculture, something has shifted and a lot of the fields are overgrown and have become nothing more than briar thickets. Brooding ground is not what it used to be. Birds are still there but they are nothing like it once was for sure

Hopefully that did some good but I can tell ya turkeys didn't move in….

20 years ago, most of the gobblers there went gay. You would hen call to a gobbling bird, and they would run the other way…the few that would come to a hen call were killed as two year olds or Jake's…the others died of old age since without passing their seed along. Just a few years later they were all gone.

Just my theory based on my experiences.

Area 13 used to be covered in turkeys also, a few years ago, BigAl and I went up there and couldn't find any turkey sign. Hog sign everywhere we went though.

Yep the tree hugging dirt worshippers ruined LBL. When they started screaming that they wanted lbl to return to the prairie land it supposedly once was. Rumor has it that farmers won't farm it due to crop loss. I call bs - it's due to the rules and such put in place after the environweenies got involved.

The out of control hog population and the TWRA washing their hands of the problem is the number one reason that the wild turkey population is in a drastic decline IMO. Them critters will sure nuff ruin a good deer season also .
