I'm going to be down around Laurel Hill WMA over the long Christmas weekend. It looks like there are no big game hunts going on, so, I may just head over and do a little squirrel hunting. My plan is to just walk some ridges until I find some squirrels. I've never stepped foot on or even driven through the WMA. Is there anything special I need to know about the place? Do I have to park at a designated spot, or is parking aloud anywhere I can get off the road?

Thanks in advance, Buzz

Park anywhere you can. There's a ton of squirrels everywhere. Not very flat terrain there so be prepared for that. Send me coordinates of good deer sign. Lol

Thanks for the info. If I see any deer sign of significance, I'll let you know where and what I've seen.

Hunted there with my daughter for youth deer in Oct. Squirrels absolutely everywhere. Be prepared for steep terrain if you get off the road at all.

Fun day in the woods. I got to the southern most entry just as the fog burned off. I passed a Toyota with a dog box in the back and drove on down the road. As soon as I was far enough away that I figured I'd be out of their range, I found a nice pull-off and stopped. I really liked the way the land was with the road along the top of the ridges, narrow overgrown fields also on top, and wooded draws and bottoms. As I walked down a wooded hollow, I was spooking squirrels right away. I found a spot to sit and wait them out. Of course they were all on the other side so I picked up and moved. It didn't take long to get 2 shots and have 2 squirrels on the ground. By then, the temps had risen above freezing and I could silently slip down the draw. A couple hundred yards and I had another shot only to have a dud shell and no second chance. A little while longer and I got my third squirrel. After that, I headed back to the car and cleaned my squirrels.

I spent the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon driving around and hiking into different areas. I really liked the WMA for squirrel hunting; nice roads, no trash to speak of, good mix of hardwoods and fields. I can't believe I've been visiting the County for the past 13 years and haven't hunted here yet.

It really was a nice place to hunt. I saw some deer sign, but nothing that made me think I really needed to note this and let you know. It would have been nice to have a few more days to hunt there before heading back home. I did check out both lakes and will be back to fish in the summer. Thanks for the info.
