I've been thinking about the idea of putting a pin in to hold the striker. I drilled the end of the chalk stopper to put the pin in when using the caller.
Actually, it is scrap wood savaged from skids around here!!! As for sound, if you weren't looking at it you'd think it had feathers!!! How bout them apples!
The guy that thought me how to kill a turkey used a store bought scratch box back in the 90s. Something about that sound would make them run in. I don't remember the brand he had but it was deadly.
Making this one for my grandson, they are coming in this weekend and he wants to go turkey hunting. Ash sound board, poplar frame, laminated poplar/cherry striker.
Ash for the sound boards and poplar for the frame, laminate slate/ ash for the striker, river cane for the chalk holder and red cedar for the stopper and pin. Size 2" x 4" with the curved soundboard 2.5"x 4" with thickness of 1/8". Frame thickness 7/16", 1/2" "U" channel.
Striker 2.5" x 2" x 1/4" thick.
220 gr sandpaper glued to one end for slate.
