I'm only one season in with them, and I don't recall being in really wet conditions with them, so I don't have an answer on the waterproof aspect. They are very comfortable and lightweight and grip well.

They were a Christmas gift - I asked for a different brand, but they couldn't be found, and got these. I told my wife my biggest "want" in boots is being lightweight and 400g. These were actually lighter than the ones I wanted and I have been impressed with them

Re: Lace up hunting boots

I have a pair of the Irish Setter Vaprtrek. I have had them 2 years and they have held up great. The soles had a weird rubber smell when I first bought them. I was concerned because I'm careful with scent control. But it wore off fairly quickly. Haven't had a problem with mine leaking. I was at Cabelas last weekend and they had several pair on clearance. I started to buy a extra pair to put up.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

Regarding some of the "feedback" that's being posted on various websites about the Vaprtreks not being waterproof,
my gut feeling is a least some of this may be misunderstanding.

Some of the posters talk about walking in tall wet weeds for extended distances.
Some of that moisture may have been coming in above their boots, and some may have just been heavy foot perspiration.
If you were walking continuously in foot-deep water, how is any Goretex boot going to "breathe" ?
Goretex boots "breathe" when they're surrounded by air, not water.
Tall wet weeds may be more like water than air?

I had the same exact smell on on mine, well, with any new boots really. I'll typically get a brand new pair and go hiking and drag them through dirt and mud and let them sit outside for an extended period of time...seems to do the trick.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

I use fanned pronghorn 400gr thinsulate and gortek.

They are the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. Your mileage may vary.

They have never leaked but one year I let them get really muddy and didn't clean them before the season. When I walked through water the durable water repellent had been broken down by the mud.

Now I clean and re-apply a new sap every year to keep them really nice and dry. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair again. They come non-insulated, in 400 or higher amounts. I prefer 400 for one pair of boots, if I had the money I would buy an un-insulated pair then a 800 or 1000 pair. I don't hunt as often in the cold as some people and historically my feet don't get too cold.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

Uninsulated Danner Pronghorn unless really cold, then I wear Schnee's

LOL!! True Gore Tex boots Will Not leak when walking in tall wet weeds! Getting your legs wet is one thing, leaking boots is another. I have stood in a creek in 6-8 inches of water for 30 mins at a time while fishing, gutting/skinning deer, etc. and Gore tex boots DO NOT leak!

I know their gear gets dogged on here, but, my Under Armor Speed Freaks have be great early season boots.

Yes, the goretex insert can't leak unless punctured, but if the leather or outer material doesn't have an effective durable water repellent the outer will gather moisture and lead to cold feet. NOT WET.

I've never had a goretex boot get my feet wet unless it got punctured.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

I've got Irish setter trailblazers that are 2 years old and worn daily. The waterproof bootie lasted probably 18 months which is pretty good in my experience. I kept them oiled up but the liner finally broke down after enough miles. Seems like the boot being soaked through accelerates the wear on the waterproof lining. I don't have boots that only get worn hunting. My knee boots go most of the time deer hunting but if it's warm or I'm hunting small game or turkey, my everyday boots get the nod.

It depends on what you're walking on too. I've worked places where I was side hilling all day every day on chert ground and trashed $200 pairs in less than 3 months-uppers chewed up, leaking, and tread, especially the heel, worn slick. I can't blame the boots there.

Most important thing is to get something that agrees with your foot architecture. I've tried Danner more than once and been frustrated each time. They don't jive with my feet, period.

I haven't heard of primaloft? My regular vaprtreks didn't even last a season. Light weight and comfortable, but not durable

my vaprtreks were waterproof when I got them but that didn't last long. They were coming apart within a year. I did wear them a whole lot though. Won't ever buy them again

Primaloft is a brand of high quality insulator without the bulk that's found in a myriad of clothing items. Similar to "Thinsulate".

Re: Lace up hunting boots

Have read all I need to about the Irish Setter boot. I know know to look elsewhere.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

I ended up buying two pairs for a trip last week from two different Cabela's stores.

I believe the Danner Vitals offer better ankle support and I like the lace locks. They seem to run small and I settled on a pair of 13ee. I wear 11.5 4eee wides in a Brooks sneaker shoe. I really like the Vitals.

However, these Vapertexks in 13ee were on sale for $99 last week and I found a pair in stock.. so I kept and wore them on Saturday. They are light comfortable and I expect to get a few years from them. https://www.cabelas.com/product/footwea ... s?slotId=0

This particular model has a blend of the soft rubber soles that wear out quickly and a vibram type in high wear areas. There is no comparison between this shoe and the originals that they are also clearing out

For my limited needs, the $80 in savings was the decider. However, if I still hunted in steep terrain I would go with the Vitals for better support.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

I've owned several pairs of danner work boots that had the gore Tex in them. I know the last 3 pairs leaked within a month of getting them. I wouldn't be hesitant to get a pair and I did get a pair of their snake boots before bow season that I've been pleased with but I'd keep the receipt handy.

Re: Lace up hunting boots

Bull Moose, with your shoe size I'm guessing that you are a larger man like myself. I bought a pair of Vaprtreks 2yrs ago for turkey hunting, they are great at the start of the day but by noon time I can't wait to get out of them. That soft sole that let's you feel everything before committing your weight forward also has the drawback of not having alot of support. Walking all day turkey hunting is one thing, deer hunting and walking less than 5 miles you will be fine and really appreciate their light weight.

Well, I'm 6 feet and need to lose 30 lbs to be at my AK moose hunt weight in 1997! :)

The Cabela's in Fort Oglethorpe had a table of probably 30 pairs of the older Vaperteks. The bottoms are basically the same as a pair of crocs.
