I shot this buck this morning. As he came through I noticed he wasn't really "limping" but was "hunkered" up and moving very slow and gingerly. When I got to him I noticed an old gun shot wound that had entered about 6 inches behind the shoulder and just under the back bone. While skinning him I noticed puss around the entrance wound and the exit wound directly across from the entry. I guess it was just a clean pass through. Not sure what was causing the "hunkered" up and slow moving? Maybe nerve damage?

These animals are amazingly tough critters! Either way, glad he's out of his misery and will be feeding the rehab men.

Great buck!

That spine shot is risky for that very reason. It's not hard to impact above vitals and below spine. Many a buck has dropped like a ton of bricks and lied there stunned only to jump up and run off never to be seen again.

Absolutely, I've seen that done.

Do you think his posture and "hunkered" body was nerve damage? The ribs seemed to be in tact as well as the spine.

Congrats!

That should have been a double lung hit if it were below the spine. Until this year I would have never believed a deer could survive a double lung hit, but I saw it first hand while gutting one that had an old wound.

I'd guess the slow walk could be nerve damage, but it very well could be arthritis. I've seen lots of older bucks move stiff and slow with the old guy shuffle.

Was he on your land or were you hunting public land

Congratulations. Killed one this year that we shot 2 years ago. He developed a huge mass on his front. When we killed him he has pretty much healed. Tough animals. Love chasing them.

DNB buddy! I know someone somewhere was sick to see him leave out and not find him after they shot for sure!
Thanks MUP. I talked to a guy on our lease last night that lives in Nashville, he thinks it's the one he missed opening week of gun.

I have killed several over the years that had broken arrow shafts in them. One shaft was inside the backstrap and was about 7" long! Another shaft with a satellite broadhead on it (over 30 years ago) was embedded in the brisket area and had about 4" of shaft attached to it on another buck I killed. Tough critters for sure.
