Kicked up a few Rabbits

I haven't rabbit hunted without dogs in years but yeaterday a few kids and myself kicked up several and had a good day. Plus it is a great way to get excercise!

Nice rabbits...how do you kick them out? just rustle up the thick ground cover/undergrowth and snap shoot as they run out? I've only got a .17 air rifle for killing them so I need a still shot not a running one (head or neck shot will drop one right away)

Lately I haven't seen many at all, but I'm wanting one really bad so I can give the meat a try since it's supposed to be so good

Catman, I doubt your gonna get a shot at one sitting still after busting them out of their brush piles or whatever cover they are in, I would get a shotgun for that kind of rabbit hunting, and christmas is coming up, so you could throw some money together and get you a decent shotgun for under $200, I use my winchester model 1300 turkey gun for everything birds, squirrels, rabbits, and other critters

Catman, I doubt your gonna get a shot at one sitting still after busting them out of their brush piles or whatever cover they are in, I would get a shotgun for that kind of rabbit hunting, and christmas is coming up, so you could throw some money together and get you a decent shotgun for under $200, I use my winchester model 1300 turkey gun for everything birds, squirrels, rabbits, and other critters

I am actually getting a shotgun sometime soon, probably just after christmas, so I will have it in time for spring turkey season. will get a 12 gauge with 3" chamber for those big turkey loads...could just use cheap shells for rabbits, but then I'd also like to hunt rabbits in more residential areas where an air rifle is much safer and won't get cop calls from the bang. I've shot rabbits before as pest control but it was off-season and now that it's actually rabbit season and I want to take some legally and eat them, they have disappeared. Or at least seemingly.

Heck yea, well they do make air shotguns, not to sure how effective they are lol, but I'm glad to see your getting you 12 gauge, I got my first 12 gauge around 7-8 yrears old, it was a new englander single shot with 3 1/2in chamber, I use to put a whooping on turkeys with that gun, I only paid like $80 for it brand new, and that gun will do the job, but I slightly upgraded to the winchester model 1300 turkey, its built specifically for turkey hunting with the extended choke on it, but I use it for rabbit and squirrel as well

It don't take hardly nothing to kill a rabbit,I'd advise a 2 3/4in low brass #6 shot for rabbits. Alot of your shots will be close if kicking them out of brush piles and you can flat ruin a rabbit with a 12 ga if your not careful.

I shoot a .410 for rabbits but that tight group might make it tough kicking them out.

It's deadly when the dogs are running them.

You use the 12 gauge for squirrels too? I pick them off out of my kitchen window with my air rifle...it doesn't take much to kill one of those. Well the fox squirrels are a little harder, but I'm sure a .22 could handle it just fine

My first rabbit gun was a mossberg, bolt action, 20 ga. with a polychoke. It was a great little rabbit/squirel gun.

I am thinking about getting a break open action NEF 20 gauge just to carry for squirrels/rabbits. It's much lighter to carry than my Mossberg 500 12 gauge.
