Just got a 45 cal stainless Ruger Old Army tonight off of gunbroker. I got it for a followup shot during ML season. There have been a couple of times that I wish I had one. Somehow I think I will end up shooting it mostly just for fun. Now I have to go spend money on things like powder, balls, a holster, maybe a spare cylinder ($200  ), and possibly sending off the cylinder to have it back bored. I guess the spending has just started.

It came in yestarday. It looks and feels great. Does anyone have any experience with good hunting loads. I have read where I can load it with loads comprable to 45acp, 44 special, 45 lc, and maybe even more powerful if I deepen the cylinder. When I look up loads for other black powder pistols, there is always a maximum charge. In the ROA owners manual, it states that you can put as much powder as will fit in the cylinder.

Here are some loads I have found so far.

35 gr 777 and a 147 round ball
951 fps average

40 gr 777 and a 147 round ball
1111 fps average

45 gr 777 and a 147 round ball
1192.5 fps average

25 grs 777 and a 225 gr Lee conical
767.4 fps average

30 grs 777 and a 225 gr Lee conical
918.5 fps average

I've got it's twin, with some extras.

You could have had mine if I knew you needed/wanted one.

Stuff it as full as you want and pull the trigger.

Just don't have your hand in front of the cylinder when you fire it - it will scorch your index finger on down.

Good luck, they are the finest bp pistol ever made.

Wish I had the money to buy another one. How much would you take for it? Just to see if I need to cry.

You don't happen to have a spare cylinder do you?

I've got $375 in the gun and another $50-100 in extra stuff.

I'll check on the cylinder. I may just have one.

I know I've got extra stuff I ordered directly from Ruger.

Gun's been in my safe - unfired - for 5 years or so.
