We didn't get drawn this year but it was only 50/50 with no PP, so I'm not surprised but still disappointed. Gonna have to come up with plan b now.

For future reference I don't know how but I have two buddies that applies for shotgun one in our zone 7 every year and can you believe they've been successful in drawing a non resident out of state buck tag for this being the 5yr in a row. The only thing they claim that has to work on doing so is they send in their application minutes after their posted to apply every year. That has to be true or else how would my old man only draw every other year? The alternate so the new without buck tags can still go and party hunt but my old man doesn't believe it and hasn't tried.

We could probably get a shotgun tag every year as 75% of the NR tags go to shotgunners but we swore of that season because of the craziness of the locals chasing deer all over with trucks. It's only 5 days and just too insane.

It's always been a family tradition with us for years on my family's farm and all the friends of the family's farms since 2001. Last time I went was 2011 and I decided it just wasn't for me anymore. My hunting expertise wasn't killing those big bucks instead it was other people's feet work. I know I have the skills to outsmart the mature bucks so I decided to stay at home. I didn't care for some of the locals ground checking bucks or running ahead to the hot spots when they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn constantly wounding bucks. My old man and 3 close friends still go. Since 2011 I have bought preference points and have 4. I planned on going back bow hunting but plans have fallen through each attempt. I would try the application tip. You never know it might work with an archery tag too.

Well it's not like that AlL iowa shotgun hunters are like that, but assuming TN has their share of dumb @$$ also. Deer drives are what they are and yes I did it for years, but just standing at a hot spot doesn't mean the big bucks automatically run by you and it's like a shooting gallery! Yes we have dicks up here but other hunters and land owners are putting a lot of pressure on them and they are getting caught. Lots of public places to hunt and don't forget 2nd season is a longer and has less pressure. I hunt with my ml and like the idea a few are pushing deer around me. Drives are ok if done right, that's the big thing if done right and the setters along with the pushers don't stray like everyone agrees at the start of the drive.

Ours used to be super organized. Before we headed out opening morning cousins and friends handed out walkie talkies. We coordinated everything with them and it helped. I just kept mine on but didn't know north or south so I just kept quiet. Had me puzzled when all that chatter went quite. Through the spotting scope I saw DNR everywhere around the road standers. Long story short, 20+ walkies went into the snow instantly then they spilled the beans on it being illegal. Now they don't get the men beside them out of sight and stay in a straight line. The driving has its perks but there's so many deer that get wounded doing it cause people can't shoot or can't wait for them to stop cause they'll always stop. Alot of people don't realize that being farm country most public land gets little archery pressure and even less in shotgun cause their too big to make drives through. Least that's how it is around Grinnell where our farm is.

You hit the nail on the head about drives, people don't wait until they have a good shot and we use to push we'd walk a little ways, stop for a couple minutes and listen, then go a little further. We had several points in the timber where you could see the pushers and we'd all wait until each of us was at the point before advancing. Guys on the ends didn't shoot towards the pushers ans we didn't shoot towards them. Course it doesn't always work that way with some groups! The smaller public areas don't see a lot of pressure either, especially during archery and even during shotgun because they aren't worth pushing to some groups. We have several small, 5 acre public areas around here that don't get hunted. Deer may not stay in them, but use them as travel corridors during shotgun seasons if people are hunting around them.
