Just wondering what everyone would think about this.
Seems like I have heard of places that have this but not sure.

What would you think about having a shell quantity restriction on public lands for duck hunting?

Say 10-15 shells per person only?

I have only duck hunted a few years and 99% of my experience is on public land.
Way too many blinds and way too close together but other than that the swing shooters and sky busters beat all I ever seen.
From what I have seen very very few people actually work ducks and let them get in the hole before shooting.

The last time we went hunting we had a group of about 20 mallards working the hole, locked up and dropping.
We needed about 15 more seconds before we could shoot them.
Two woodies flew by the next blind down from us at literally 80 yards.
All 5 or 6 guys in that blind shot every shell they had at them.
Literally reloaded and shot another 12-15 rounds at them at over 100 yards.

Out of 10 hunts the closest I have seen them knock a duck down is at about 50 yards. Most shots, even locked up and coming in they still start shooting at 60 to 70 yards.
I guess I am just stupid but I much prefer to have them in my face, feet down at about 20-25 yards.

I understand public land hunting is just that but sheesh.
Just curious who would support such a rule?
From an agency standpoint, would it even be enforceable?

My last experience duck hunting public land was disappointing. I can safely say I won't do it again. I wish I had a good idea how to fix it. Limiting shells could help. Even though they are easy to hide, most folks would be honest. Everyone would be recording other hunters shots to see if they were over their limit of shells.

That's a great idea I think. But to people like that it wouldn't stop them. Instead of 5-6 guys shooting they'd just split up and have 2-3 shoot at 80 yards. So It would nearly be the same amount of volleys which still screws everyone up People like that are the WORST!!! So selfish and greedy. Just worried about a Instagram or Snap or Facebook post There a old saying in golf that a scorecard doesn't show any pictures. Same applies here lol. Those guys don't care that it took each of them 1.5 boxes of shells to scrap out 10 ducks They just worried about some street cred Losers

Not sure it would help us any, I haven't shot a box of shells yet this season. And I mean a box for the entire season so far, not a box a trip. I think the most shells I have personally fired in one trip this season has been 5.

The only way this works is a property manager or Game warden would have to check or inspect every person coming into the state land each morning before hunting. It could not be left up to people to self regulate or honor system. Too many people would not follow the rules or find ways to fudge the system. People would bring kids or other family members to have extra shells. If not just bring more then allowed anyway.

Bayou Meto, in AR, had the shell rule as well as a reduced bag limit on Mallards from 4/3. I believe they have dropped both rules a couple of years ago. The intent was to limit folks from shooting swing birds and tree top birds. If you have have 15 shells you're more likely to wait for higher percentage shots. I have had wardens ask to see my empties but can't imagine it being easy to enforce. If you're shooting decoying birds at 20-30 yards, you shouldn't need many shells.

Public Land duck hunting is and has been in a sad state. It's astonishing to watch 3 different blinds shoot at a single bird that started out at 80 yards from the blind that "Tried Him". It is certainly about a combination of greed and lack of respect.

yes, we has talked to state commissioners about some ideas on over crowding, skybusting on wmas. deaf ears. its a shame. seems they dont want to make anyone upset. wma populations are steady declining where hunting is allowed non stop. wish lots more would voice their opinions.

It's a good idea in theory. No major downside. But it won't happen. TN wont adopt a rule that might limit license sales. That said, an involved cripple chase could use up a decent percentage of your daily allotment.

We have a handful of the "better" WMAs here in KY with 25 shell limits. It's one of those things where people might complain for a couple years, but they get used to it. As to rather or not it helps on sky busting I'd say it just depends on the day. If it's a slow hunting day jack wagons are going to shoot at birds 70+ yards (watched some of the worst I've ever seen just a couple weeks ago on one of those places). If birds are moving good all day then maybe they start being more selective, or shoot their 25 shells and pack up. You gotta think too in a blind with 4 guys, that's 100 shells and that is more than plenty to ruin a hunt for the neighbors.

Of course this all depends on GWs that are able to check folks, or some sort of check in procedure
