Deer hunting for this year. I got a late start, wasn't prepared, couldn't find a lease and have been hunting the public land around Knoxville. In 11 hunts and 82 hours logged in the woods I have yet to see a deer of any type.

I have to hand it to you guys that regularly see and kill deer up here especially on public land. I have been out of hunting for about 10 years but before that stretch I hunted a lot every year. I grew up on a farm in Dyer County and can count on one hand the times I hunted and saw nothing. It might be does or 600 yards away but almost every day I saw something. I underestimated how tough it is up here.

Today was my last Tuesday off until Jan 6th and with the holidays I am just going to take the boy squirrel hunting the rest of the season. He will be 10 in January and has a new 20 guage under the tree and has no idea. He did Hunter safety this year and is raring to go. I had hoped to take him Jan 11th and try and let him get a doe but I haven't even seen one to be confident I can make it happen lol. He would rather move around than sit still at this point anyway. I definitely know where the squirrels are there were over 20 in view at one point this morning.

All indications are I am on what is a great lease for next year and will be prepared to hunt from the bow opener on. Good luck to all you guys the rest of the season and thanks for all the advice. I'm sure I will ask a lot more lol.

sorry you haven't seen one. that boy is gonna love his gift and I bet you can't wait to watch him open it up. good luck next year and I hope that boy kills a bunch of squirrels.

Sorry you had a rough season. I'm sure you will see a bunch when you take the boy out with the shotgun lol

I am unsure about Tapatalk

Hope the season is better for you next year. I have several "0" days each year where I hunt. I've just learned to accept it I guess. Anyway, you'll see some deer on the squirrel hunt for sure! ;)

Been a slow season for me as well. But such is hunting, especially here in
East Tn. I did manage to put two in the freezer so I'm not complaining.
Hope you have a better season next year.
Enjoy the time with your son, hope you kill a limit of squirrels.

I have hunted for three years here in East TN without even seeing a deer up until Sunday when I killed that spike. The deer are on public land they are just a lot smarter than we are! Keep you head up and enjoy hunting with that young man. Thats what memories are made of.

Oh I am all good lol, not giving up totally just moving on and hunting small game until next year when I get on a lease and prepare. Public land is very tough here and I said several times that I am not sure if I am"hunting" or simply "sitting in the woods" lol. Its so different than hunting edges and fields in West TN that I grew up on. I have killed numerous deer but never in the woods, always in a field. Totally different style of hunting and I underestimated the difference in challenges.
