No doubt! Maybe 50 of us could go in on one of those machines!
I bought a 4 hour video from Richard Franklin which details all the process of metalwork for precision rifles. I've been drooling ever since with thoughts of turning the boat and the space where it sets into the equipment. We'll see this year. Anyone need a good bass and crappie boat?
My brother who's now about 60 whose company just closed just started the millwrights course at the local vo-tech school here and will be learning just this for the next two years. Maybe he'll be able to give me some pointers.
My understanding is the tooling will cost about as much again as the machinery.

If I thought I could learn the skills, I`d turn my tractor and equipment for enough to make it happen. This is Gordy Gritters who made this DVD for Grizzly, mr. bigs brother Ronnie, has a rifle built by him that is supposed to rock. He has a very good reputation as a smith.

I could use a lathe today. I've been trying to make a outside neck chamferer with an inside the neck mandrel the same size as my once fired cases inside diameter. It's just an idea I've been playing with to prevent damage to the case mouth when beveling the outside edge. I really don't have the precision to do what I want and need a small lathe to keep everything aligned including the threads for the tool to attach to my case trimmer. Just using the standard dies I have won't get the threads on straight enough for my purposes and I get too much wobble. Back to the drawing board.

Great news for me today. I have 2 blanks at my smith, but his point blank season is nearing so close I was sure worried about my projects. I called and told him of me joining the IBS and was going to St. Louis in March for my first 600 yd match, I smoothed it over to get 1 of my blanks chambered plus my blowout barrel for the Dasher. I been on a natural high all day...........Going to St Louis with a brand new barrel.

Congrats Tim. It's always nice to get new toys. Now you'll have some work to do before March. I just sent off my IBS membership yesterday. Odd you mentioned it. Oak Ridge doesn't start up until late April so I guess I'll have until then to get my new barrel broken in and loads worked up. I want to give the head plenty of time to get settled down and not take any backwards steps. I mowed the leaves last week and that was a mistake. I've paid for it ever since. I want to try the 108, and 115 Bergers sometime before then and I've got 107 Sierras in my first loads. I've already got some of the 108s and need to get a few of the 115s. Your loads in that 6 Dasher should be practically the same loads as for my BRX. There's almost no difference in case capacity. Varget, RL15, and H4895 seem to be some of the top choices. I was told to go with Varget, CCI450s, 105 Bergers and Lapua cases and just forget everything else. The guys saying this are hard to ignore.
The 600 yard nationals should be a hoot in June here at Oak Ridge. I doubt I'll be much for competition for the top shooters but maybe I can be some help by being a bucket carrier. Doesn't Bass Pro need to sponser a couple of representatives from Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee to shoot in this match as newcomers. Good luck!

This will be a learning experience for sure. I may be to overwhelmed for it to be fun, but I`ll try......the loads you have sound great, and I am going to add some Vhit powder to that short list, and Federal 205M`s, I have many JLK 105`s, CR 100`s, Spencer 103`s, Berger 105/108`s to play with, just need to pick out 2 bullets, 2 powders, and 2 primers to play with.
I was told that the Federal 205s would result in pierced primers with my standard Remington 700 bolt and the BRX and that is why they recommended the CCI450s. I had the firing pin bushed since then so I should be able to get by with the Federal 205s now. So many components...so little time...so little money.

The 450`s are a great primer, but I have a very opinionated shooting buddy that is hard to deal with on occasion who lives and breaths CCI450`s. That alone made me try some different stuff, and I have found my 6/47 loves the Federal 205`s. He hates Sierra bullets with a passion, he hates the 6.5/284 case.
Needless to say it is under his skin with my last 2 outings being pretty successful.
I shot terrible at the last match overall, and he said it was due to me shooting the 6.5/284.
His words is they are either a hero or a zero.
I put a light pass with my neck turner on 30 brand new cases because our Feburary match, he has a good friend coming from out of town to show us how it is done according to my buddy.
I`m still learning and can take my licks with the best of them, but one day I might just pass out a few.

If I were building another rifle with thoughts of doing 1000 yards as well as the 600 it would probably be the 6.5-284. Since I was only planning on the local shoots at 600 it followed to be a 6BR or one of the clones. After looking at all of the shoot results and equipment lists of successful shooters these stood out. No sense in my reinventing the wheel. PPC for 100-300, 6BR or variant for 300-600, and 6.5-284 from 600 out.....that seems to be my understanding. When I'm well versed and a pro then I'll think about others. Of the people's advice I've been taking three of the gentlemen have set new world records at 600 yards in the past couple of years. Those are the ones I listen to. Lots of others give advice to be taken with a grain of salt. Sounds like you know Tim.

the Rifle he built my brother is a single shot 40X action with a 27 inch 223 AI and he sent an extra bolt and has a 30 inch 6.5-284 switch bbl.
it will shoot 40 NBT`s in one hole at 200 yards or the 142 Sierra in the 10 ring at 600 and 1000 if the nut behind the trigger is tight.
