This is my first season deer hunting and I wanted to know if anyone recommends a decent .223 caliber bullet for it. I bought the Hornady VMax but I've been getting some responses that say it may not do the trick. So if anyone has any input I would really appreciate it!
FYI if you're going to tell me to use a larger caliber, please don't post because it's not helpful and not going to change my mind :D

Try remmie corelokt if you do not handload. Vmax are varmint rounds. Get a coupla boxes and sight in you should be good to go. Check ballistics to determine your maximum range.

Best of luck.

Thanks muddyboots and DaveB. I may get a little of both to get a feel for them and see how my rifle likes them. Only thing is, I think 64 grain or so is what I should use. The varmint rounds are only 55gr. I think a little more weight on that initial punch through would help carry it all the way through. Thanks again guys!

Those varmint rounds are made to fragment and you wont get the penetration that you need. You will either have a long blood-trailing job and have to pick out all the pieces of the meat or even worse, you will wound it and not recover. So for the sake of the deer, dont use varmint rounds on them.

Do you handload? If so, you got Sierra 63 gr., 60 Nosler Partition, and in factory loads Win. 64 gr. Thats all the heavier bullets I know of. Some companies have 60 gr, but I think most are heavy varmint bullets. From what I hear the 64 Win. factory load ( if you don't handload is a great penetrater) is great and has decent energy. The Partition is awesome in any caliber.

Unfortunately, I don't reload just yet. I really want to but I haven't got around to buying all of the equipment. I would love to do it but I just need to get the stuff and some time too lol. Having a 1 1/2 yr old and a full time job eats into a lot of it.
