Taking some time off to hunt and see the temps during the afternoon for the next week or so will be in the 70s. I plan on hunting from daylight to lunch in cooler temps.

What have you guys experienced hunting in the afternoon during the rut in the heat?

The peak rut hasn't started in any county in TN. Because of this, daylight buck activity during the prerut will be severely negatively influenced by the warm temps. Look for cooler creek bottoms, shade, and perhaps even water.

Once peak rut hits on my farms in 1.5 weeks, it won't matter what the temps are. Bucks will be cruising and searching in daylight even if they have to pant and foam at the mouth because of the heat to find a hot doe.

I know of one county where it is arguably close to peak rut. Based on what I've been told over the past couple years, and personally have observed this week. Bucks cruising, saw one good buck locked down with a doe. But surrounding areas that I know of are still a week or so out from peak. Williamson usually peaks dead middle of November. I've got next week off so I'm hoping the spots I've picked for rut hunting pay off. They're all tight to bedding or in between. We shall see

Once bucks start cruising, chasing, tending, you could see them anytime during the day. I killed my last buck on Dec 28th last season with temps in the mid 70s on the mtn, following a doe, at 3:30.

Rut happens of course, just a matter of whether we see it or not. When it's hot, much more activity takes place at night when the temps are somewhat cooler.

Don't personally like hunting the warmer weather but my wife does. She has had some pretty good luck the first week of muzzleloader.

Biggest issue I have is the rush to get a deer recovered, quartered and in the cooler when temps are too warm. For that reason I tell my wife when it is so warm, she is shooting one that is wall worthy or she should let them walk.
