Back in the '80s when I was at Freed-Hardeman, Chickasaw saw a lot of pressure. These days, I'm sure things are a lot different. Seems that lots of hunters join a club, lease land or hunt their own. This has spread out the pressure and the hunting should be quality. I consistently saw deer when hunting as close to Highway 100 as possible. It seems than everybody wanted to drive or walk in deeper and the deer knew it. I would often hunt on the edge of heavy cover so close to the highway that I could feel the breeze from passing traffic. Saw lots of deer.
I remember hunting during the second muzzleloader season on Chickasaw several years ago (back when lead was still legal for waterfowl). There was snow on the ground, and I remembered that I was going duck hunting the next morning and had forgotten to buy a duck stamp. I climbed down, walked a few yards to the highway, took my H&R Huntsman muzzleloader apart and shoved it into my coveralls. I hitch-hiked back to Henderson and bought a duck stamp at the court house. I walked back through down town with my muzzleloader wrapped up in my coveralls. I stopped at Huck's and bought a corn dog and some 'tater wedges and caught a ride back to Chickasaw and had them drop me off at my stand.
