Thinking about going to southern Il and hunting government land next yr instead of getting on a lease. I have few small places I can hunt locally for free. Got on lease looking for better deer this yr. Is it hard to get a buck tag and what do ya'll that have tried this think? I hunt bow and mz. Thanks for your help.

there is a lot of Shawnee in southern Illinois.and there are big deer killed on it every year.i would stick to bow hunting it.it gets extreme pressure in shotgun season

The nonresident lotteries for both archery and muzzleloading tags has already been held. I suspct they did not exceed their quota of archery tags, so some should be available over the counter for at least the time being. You can buy your nonresident license and antlerless tags throughout the season. Their plans last year were to shut off the sale of either-sex/buck tags once the season started to stop the issue of nonresidents buying the expensive tag after killing their buck. But, I don't think they followed through with that plan.

A muzzleloading tag may be hard to get at this point. If the county did not fill its quota, I think they have daily lotteries until it does. You should call the IL DNR on the availability.

Sorry, I just saw the next year part. The application period for nonresidents for both the archery and muzzleloading tags was in May-June this year. The muzzleloading lottery was at the same time as the archery rather than being later as in previous years.
