Depending on just how much before rut, could change my answer.
If we're talking late October, will say proably he's 3 1/2.

If we're talking September, will just say don't have a clue.

Late summer / early fall, not much to go by, other than can often rule out yearlings and 2 1/2's.

The buck in the above pic looks 3.5 to me... I just can't see the buck in the first pic being 4.5 (unless the pic was taken mid Sept, and even then it would be a stretch).

Are you SURE they are of the same deer?
