shady grove..paris,tn
i have the horns blacked out so better estimates can be made..and i also have a few more inquires about this deer later..a few hints..he dressed out at 177 and change..he was harrassing does..but not in full rut yet..throut had not started to swell yet..tarsels were starting to blacken up though..and he had that front heavy look to him..i know its really hard to judge a dead deer..but i bet most get close..ok lets see what the census is

According to BSK, if he had the "buffalo" look, he is only 3.5,
but who knows. I guess the teeth will tell the tale.

well ok then..first off.the deer weighted 167lbs..tried to edit post but didnt know how..
i shot the deer thursday morning at about 6:00(first good light)..i knew the deer was mature and had a good spread but no time to glass him good..field is 80yds wide and he is half was across and still truckin..at 165yds the 250g shockwave made a good pass thru and he made it just to the edge of the woods(40yds)..as you can tell by the pic i was kinda shocked at what i saw when i got to him..6 points..no way..thought well he aint as old as i thought..just very big...when i droped it off at the pross/taxiderm i told him to check the jaw and call me..she called yesterday morning and said best he could tell it was 5 years old..for sure 4 but he thought 5..then she says he said from the feet the deer had EHD pretty bad but pulled through it at some time..maybe more than 1 year of his life..all 4 holves were in bad shape..said this was # 3 he has seen like this deer(older with small rack) so far this year..said he caped it just in case i wanted it mounted..all that said for this..the deer should have been in the prime of his life shouldnt he? surely should have been better than a 6 point at his age..he is not the common 4 y.o. deer for this area..was it the EHD..he had enough to eat..there are over 1000 acres of ag fields plus all the food plots and mast crop around here..i thought by antler regrowth he would have been over the EHD..just havent seen a deer like this around here..kinda disturbing..could it have just been his genes to be small racked like that..no big deal i dont guess..but kinda dishearting to get a mature buck that looks like that..hard to see him as a trophy..even though most deer that age are veiwed that way..

I look at it like this,if he's mature,he's a trophy in my book no matter what the rack looks like..some bucks just don't have the genes.

Congrats btw!

I agree with that. There's a certain % of bucks that will never have big antlers. I shot a 6 point last year (4 x 2) that was 3 or 4 by the jawbone. His body was huge and good over 200 lbs, biggest bodied deer I ever killed. His rack grossed less than 80 inches. No mass, short tines and not many of them. 15 inch inside spread. I was tickled to death with him though.

It's hard to judge a buck and say it's for sure 5.5 yrs old. Reason I say that is because some deer are way older than that, but most people feel more comfortable saying 5.5. Some big bucks like that lose alot of antler after getting to be over 5.5 yrs old or older. JMO

As old as he is ever gonna get? that would be my guess... :)

You should be proud to have taken one of the old warhorses...Many of us don't get to see one with that kind of age on him...CONGRATS!
