How many use a lever action .44 mag?

Where I hunt at most shots are 75 yards and in. You would be hard pressed to get a shot out to 100 yards. Currently I have a 7mm-08 which is a great deer caliber but I've been thinking about trying a lever action 44magnum.

Any of you out there use one and what's your experience with it.

I've got a Winchester 94 trapper in .44. It's a pretty handy rifle and I've killed a few deer and several pigs with it, it shoots pretty good. That being said, I wouldn't take ten of them for my 45/70 guide gun. Flatter shooting and more energy.

I've also thought about a 45-70 as well.

I've got a winchester model 92 clone ( Rossi) and it's a nice gun. I think it comes in 44 magnum. Mine shoots good and has functioned flawlessly. I've shot 2 with is and neither went over 20 yds.

One of the main things that makes me consider the 44 is putting a can on it.

Levers are my favorite, even though I use bolt actions too.

I've never felt handicapped at woods ranges using the 30/30, .375 Winchester, .44 Mag, .444 Marlin, or 45/70. A lot of mine wear scopes these days, but I still use peep sights too.

The .44 mag puts a hurt on them for sure.

I've kinda kept my eyes open for a Ruger 77/44 to hunt the same situations you have described. I also think it would be a great gun for creeping around after the rut looking for pigs…

I have a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. It's wearing a ghost ring sight since my eyes suck anymore. Haven't poked a hole in a critter with it though.

Have a Henry Golden boy in 44 mag. I've killed several deer, pigs and a couple bear with it. I use underwood ammo. The 240 grain xtp and shoot open sites. The gun is extremely accurate and most shots are under 100 yards. Great blood trails too.

I also have one of these that I've never shot. I think it would make a fine deer gun for close work.

I do believe you all have helped to convince me. Now I need to find someone that would want to trade for a 7mm-08 rifle.

I'm definitely a fan boy of the .44, and yes, I've owned 45/70, 300 Weatherby, etc., but I'm not a fan of big recoil. I use my .44 in situations of hunting spots of 100 yrds or less, and I've killed at least a dozen over the years with both handgun and rifle. But the rifle sure is king in my book as it will give you an extra 300 FPS on average. Of all the deer I shot from 15-105 yards, I've NEVER recovered a bullet, all were shoot throughs. Some dropped in their tracks, but never had to trail one more than 50 yrds. That big fat slug has the momentum to make a nice exit hole everytime.
