How do you deal with this situation?

This morning after the rain I can softly hear 2 birds gobbling in the woods way deep behind me. So I start heading into the woods slowly and I can still hear them gobbling, faintly. After going in a long way I can hear them, but they still sound way far back. Eventually I decide to just sit and see if a little calling wont work. Well, after bout 45 min. of that and maybe 3 calling sequences, I dont hear them gobbling anymore. I never ended up seeing them or even hearing a close gobble. Keep in mind this all took place on public land.

So what should I have done, or what tactics should have been used for more possible success? Should I have just kept easing back, called differently,...?

Get as close as you think you possibly can before you call. They may or may not have heard you, or may have had hens which walked them the opposite direction.
